As a blizzard raged outside, the firefighters fought the raging inferno inside the shop and managed, against the odds, to save the structure. Minutes counted. They never hesitated. We were blessed by the fact that this was our shop and not our house. We were further blessed by the quick and deci- sive actions of the Hensall firefighters who entered the building at great risk to themselves and proceeded to suppress the blaze. My family and I are very thankful for the efforts of these brave men. God bless, WILLIAM B. ROWCLIFFE. Hensall firefighters vital to community HENSALL — The Hensall and Area Fire Department is an active community focused group with strong family ties. The roster includes five officers, 15 firefighters and three Junior Auxiliary firefighters. The department serves the Municipalities of Bluewater and parts of Huron East and so far in 2005 has responded to 24 calls including: • seven motor vehicle accidents or fires; • six structural or open area fires; • two hazardous materials spills • one gas leak explosion • six false alarms and two other emergencies. On July 16, members of the department responded to calls for assistance from residents, business owners and the Queensway Nursing Home to deal with flooding. Queensway experienced the worst flooding when a blocked storm drain overflowed and flooded the elevator shaft on the lower floor with over 15 inches of water. The flooding knocked elevators out of service, stranding several elderly residents in the lobby and on the lower level of the facility for several hours. The fire department assisted by pumping water out of the blocked storm drain. Members of the department practice two times per month for approximately three hours each session. This year the department started a new training initiative to help promote community involvement and provide a unique learning opportunity for three local high school stu- dents. The students were selected for the Junior Firefighter training program based on several criteria including: • parental approval and have a valid G2 driver's licence; • must be at least 17 years of age and attending high school in Grade 11 or 12; • must be in good health, physically fit and able to partici- pate in assigned training activities. The department held their Firemen's Breakfast in June raising nearly $2,700 which helped purchase a thermal imaging camera. The department also provides assistance to other groups in the community by hosting open houses and other public events at the fire hall. Firefighters have provided assistance at community events such as the Hensall Spring Fair and the Hensall Legion Remembrance Day services. 3( J.M.
