Grand Bend Fire Chief Jerry VanBruaene speaks very highly of his volunteer fire department. The Grand Bend Fire Department may be just like a family but some of the volunteers actually are related to each other. "We've got a pair of brothers, Stan and Jim Lovie, two sets of father -in- laws, myself and Doug Jones, as well as Xavier Boogeman and Terry Brown and a father and son, Larry and Ryan Taylor." Ryan just accepted a posi- tion as a firefighter in Guelph but still helps out when possible in Grand Bend. The Grand Bend fire department volunteers also have a variety of skills which compliment each other. Two strong assets include Skip Izon who has been with the department for 14 years and is trained in Ice and Water Rescue and Sean Hill who has been with the department for three years and is a Paramedic. Chief VanBruaene believes there are two main reasons people begin volun- teering. This is former Chief ProsperVanBruaene. There are many family ties in the Grand Bend Fire Department. He is the father of current Chief JerryVanBruaene. Former ChiefVanBruaene was Chief from 1984 to 1988. His father was on the department too and VanBruaene has definitely followed in his father Prosper's footsteps. "My father was the chief of this department from 1984 to 1988," says VanBruaene. Lisa Jennison, the only woman volunteer firefighter on the team also joined because of family. Her father Doug Jennsion is a retired firefighter. When it comes to the most rewarding aspect of this experience, VanBruaene says it is the satisfaction of knowing that you've accom- plished something good for your community. "It's a pretty nice feeling knowing you can help fami- lies in bad situations," says VanBruaene. As far as summing up his department in a few words, "We're such a small group, we're like best friends, like family." Oakwood Inn commends firefighters for great job By Nina Van Lieshout TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF GRAND BEND — "I think everyone did an excellent job." Owner of the Oakwood Inn Resort & Golf Club in Grand Bend, David Scatcherd speaks of the Grand Bend and Dashwood Fire Departments positively. Scatcherd's 19th Hole Pub and Grill caught fire early Jan. 20 of this year and was completely destroyed. Unfortunately Scatcherd lost everything in the blaze. IIe estimated the damage at around $800,000, losing about $100,000 worth of irreplaceable memorabilia. Although the building was destroyed Scatcherd credits the firefighters. "They did a great job and I think everyone should be commended for what they did that day." The fire had begun shortly after midnight, the Grand Bend and Dashwood firefighters stayed on scene until 7 a.m. The blaze was ruled acci- dental by the Ontario Fire Marshall's office. The pub is being renovated but will be com- pleted soon. "It's coming along, we're expecting our grand opening in just a few weeks," says Scatcherd.
