McLeod, 55, is a district chief for Exeter and was deputy chief from 1995 until amalga- mation. "You just have to be the type of person to help," says Mcleod of what type of people are firefighters. He added you have to have an understanding wife and family McLeod said he acquired his interest in firefighting from his father who was a fire- fighter in Centralia and London. The job is "really rewarding," according to McLeod. "You see people you know you helped, although they don't know who you are." He has received "a few cuts here and there and gone through floors," but nothing dramatic, says McLeod. And credit goes to more than just firefighters, says McLeod. "Ambulance people are just great and they don't get recognition." Technology has helped the firefighters in their job, especially infrared cameras, which can reveal fires inside walls and prevent firefighters from being sent into situ- ations they are unaware of. Training has also changed, with more preplanning of towns and industries to check hose lay- outs and find out what special equipment is needed in certain areas. The village of Hensall was pre - planned in August by the department with its aerial truck, which is the only one in the southern part of the county. The department is split into four groups of six and is made of people from every walk of life. The mix of skills is valu- able, says McLeod, if things such as electrical work or carpentry are needed. The department has received good equipment from the municipality he adds. "They recognize we have to have good equip- ment. They haven't Cam M cLeod shirked responsibility." He added South Huron Mayor Rob Morley is "excellent." Although the fire departments of places such as London and Toronto are bigger, McLeod said local fire- fighters "pound for pound are just as good...and a fire in Exeter is just as hot as a fire in Toronto." The smaller number of firefighters in smaller areas requires them to be able to do everything, says Mcleod.
