Lucan coach Jason Heywood said he was happy with the effort and the team played hard in the win. "They tried some of the things we want to do as a team,...just simple hockey," said Heywood. The game was scoreless through most of the first two periods, until Smith broke the deadlock late in the second period, beating Lambeth goalie James Langford on a breakaway. Smith gave the Irish some insurance in the third with a shot underneath the crossbar for a 2-0 lead, He completed his hat trick into an empty net with just over a minute remaining. Exeter rolled over the Belmont Bombers Oct.1 in Belmont with a 5-2 win. The Hawks jumped out to early leads in both games before letting their oppo- nents back in. Exeter coach Dale Howard said the team could have been better in both games, including in Belmont after outshooting the home side 21-7 and getting only two goals. "But we got the job done," said Howard. Saturday night in Belmont, Exeter took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Jeff Ackersville with his first goal as a Hawk and Josh Liddle. But the Bombers replied with a pair of goals in the second to even the score before Liddle fired two more in the third to com- plete his hat trick. Howard said Liddle is probably the Hawks' stead- iest player. P a u l Denomme completed the scoring with a goal into the empty net for the 5-2 finish. The Hawks o u t s h o t Belmont by a 50-28 margin and went one for two on the power play. They gave up one power play goal on three Belmont chances. Joe Nesbitt had three assists in the win, with sin- gles from Ryan Abrams, Ryan Knee, Scott Davies and Tony Regier. Sunday night three goals in the first from Justin Young, Davies and Abrams left the Hawks with a 31 lead. The teams swapped goals in the second period with Jeff Smale notching the Exeter marker. But the Hawks couldn't hang on in Josh Liddle the third period, giv- ing up a pair of goals, including one on a Lambeth power play in the last minute to tie the score at 4-4. Liddle, Craig Masse and Knee had assists in the tie with the Hawks going 0-2 on the power play and giving up two Lambeth power play goals. The Hawks were out shot by Lambeth by a 56-22 margin including 16 shots faced in the third period by Exeter goalie Justin Hayter. "Hayter played superb. I'd say first star in both games," said Howard who added the Hawks will be working on "putting their foot on the gas pedal and keeping it on there." The Hawks host their home opener Friday night against the visiting Lucan Irish at 8:30 p.m. in their only game of the weekend.
