Children's eye exams
are still covered
EXETER - Now that children are back to
school, the Ontario Association of Optometrists
wants parents to know that eye examinations
for children 19 and under are still covered by
OHIP and that they are an important part of
preparing children for the new school year.
"Many parents have been coming into our
office thinking that their children's eye exami-
nations are no longer covered by provincial
health insurance," says Exeter optometrist Dr.
David Klein.
That is not the case. Children 19 years of age
and younger, along with seniors 65 and over are
still covered for their annual examinations.
"Just like the rest of their body, children's
vision changes as they grow.
"A comprehensive eye examination will moni-
tor the growth and development of the eyes to
ensure vision is maximized for school and on the
playground," Klein says.
"Parents should remember that children are
often not aware they have a vision problem
because they do not know what normal vision is.
As many as one child in six struggles with
school work because they have an undetected
vision problem."
Children rely on their vision to help them
properly develop a number of skills including
reading, copying, hand -eye co-ordination and
social skills.
"Children do not need to know their alphabet
or verbalize well to have an eye examination,"
Klein adds.
"Optometrists have child -friendly techniques to
determine if a child can see well or not. Many
conditions, such as lazy eye and turned eye,
when caught early, can be treated successfully."
