ABCA hosts 32nd Bannockburn hike
By Nina Van Lieshout
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON — The
32nd annual
Bannockburn hike is Oct.
2nd.
"We first began the hike
when the ABCA bought
the property, it was a way
to introduce the public to
the area," says
Stewardship and
Conservation Lands
Supervisor Kate Monk.
Now, 32 years later it is
still going. Last year at
least 200 people attend-
ed. Over the years there
have always been over
100 people that came out.
The Bannockburn
Wildlife area features
dominant tree cover mak-
ing it a perfect scenery
for looking at the fall
colours.
It is also home to a wide
variety of wildlife includ-
ing the kingfisher, wood-
pecker, beaver, white-
tailed deer and snowshoe
hare.
There is also an assort-
ment of plant life there,
such as highbush cran-
berry, ninebark, wild
grape and wildflowers
like black-eyed susans,
common blue violets, wild
ginger and ferns.
The hike is between 2
and 4. "You can come
whenever you want, you
don't have to come right
at 2," says Monk.
There will be volunteer
members of the Friends
of the Bayfield River to
give information along
the natural areas of the
trail. There is also a self -
guided tour booklet avail-
able for those who would
like to explore on their
own.
