(photo/submitted) ABCA hosts 32nd Bannockburn hike By Nina Van Lieshout TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF SOUTH HURON — The 32nd annual Bannockburn hike is Oct. 2nd. "We first began the hike when the ABCA bought the property, it was a way to introduce the public to the area," says Stewardship and Conservation Lands Supervisor Kate Monk. Now, 32 years later it is still going. Last year at least 200 people attend- ed. Over the years there have always been over 100 people that came out. The Bannockburn Wildlife area features dominant tree cover mak- ing it a perfect scenery for looking at the fall colours. It is also home to a wide variety of wildlife includ- ing the kingfisher, wood- pecker, beaver, white- tailed deer and snowshoe hare. There is also an assort- ment of plant life there, such as highbush cran- berry, ninebark, wild grape and wildflowers like black-eyed susans, common blue violets, wild ginger and ferns. The hike is between 2 and 4. "You can come whenever you want, you don't have to come right at 2," says Monk. There will be volunteer members of the Friends of the Bayfield River to give information along the natural areas of the trail. There is also a self - guided tour booklet avail- able for those who would like to explore on their own. Suzanne and Starr Davis and friend Lindsay Blane attended the silent auc- tion and dinner hosted by the Lucan Legion on Friday evening honour- ing Adam Dow's life. His wife Kelly along with other family members attended. A number from com- munity attended the reception honouring Dan Maguire and Jill Van Heukelom following their marriage Sept., 17, 2005 which was held in Lucan. Mr. and Mrs Maguire will make their home on the Saintsbury Line, congratulations from your relatives and friends. St. Patrick's celebrated evening prayer on Sun., Sept. 18, 2005 with Bob MacGillivray leading the service assisted by Caleb, Corbin, Heather MacGillivray and Margaret Carroll. The message was "Gods gen- erosity and hospitality to each of us". Margaret Carroll pre- sented Heather MacGillivray and Suzanne Davis with cer- tificates honouring them for their faithful service and dedication to the A.C.W. and Church. Service closed with prayer remembering Hugh Davis and evening Hymn. SAINTSBURY NEWS St. Patrick's received their invitation to St. James Anglican Church St. Marys for the Fall Perth Deanery A.C.W. meeting to be held Oct., 19, 2005 with registra- tion and refreshments at 6:30 p.m. followed by 7:00 p.m. Service, guest speaker Brenda Mitchell, topic her trip to Kenya and Tanzania with Canadian Food Grains Bank. Suzanne and Starr Davis called on friend Marilyn Rohde, Saturday and her new grandson Justin who was visiting for the day with grand- parents. On Saturday afternoon the Davis girls attended the surprise birthday celebrations honouring Tom Ellerington and his mother Doris held at the Ellerington Farm hosted bours in Saintsbury by their families. Our best wishes go out to them both from friends here at St. Patrick's. On Sunday Suzanne visited with sister Donna Martin and her family near Dashwood also call- ing on Lloyd and Phyllis Bender. Hazel Davis visited with her sister Joyce and family in London on Monday and Tuesday. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Robert Atkinson who has been ill for sometime, our get well wishes go out to him from all of us at St. Patrick's. Daughter Brenda, grandchildren Mitchell and Michelle Iredale enjoyed dinner with par- ents and grandparents Ron and Margaret Carroll recently. Seniors potluck supper planned for Oct. 4 By Jim Bearss EXETER — Exeter Senior Citizens held their meeting Sept. 6 with 64 members and friends enjoying a bountiful potluck supper at 6 p.m. President Shirley Kirk welcomed all and read "The Only Safe Food Left." Celebrating birthdays throughout the summer and September were Burdene Morgan, Shirley Kirk, Jean Anne Guenther, Maureen Wood, Elwood Truemner, Marian Dougall, Barb Miller and Lee Thomas. Anniversary celebrants were Orville and Mary Webber, Bev and Burdene Morgan, Stu and Lil McLellan, Sam and Aldene Skinner and John and Mary Horn. June Hodgson reported on the seniors trip to Windsor. District 29 had good representation on that trip. Jim Bearss reported on Senior Activities and told "The Funeral Service" and "Grandma's Apron" stories. Lee Thomas commented on the SCAT scan experience she has had. Sept. 30 Exeter Seniors are holding a Euchreama. Final plans were made for that event. C o m m unit y Thanksgiving Celebration was dis- cussed and members agreed to take part in that on Oct. 1. Committee for that event is Lee Thomas, Ruth Insley and Mary Horn; 60 members and friends received a seniors Sunshine Sample Pack from TLC Series Inc. Mildred Chalmers was chairwoman for the pro- gram. She read an autumn story and intro- duced Shelly McPhee Haist from Town and Country Services. McPhee Haist updated us on the programs available. She said we have the highest per- centage of seniors in Canada and encouraged us to make use of these services. Lil McLellan read "When I'm an Old Lady and Go Live With My Kids." Door prize winners were Gladys Bierling, Audrey McDonald, Jean Anne Guenther and Elaine Regier. Share The Wealth winners were Howard Holtzman, Marjorie Love, Anne Lorento, Jeanne Tucker, Harry Dougall, June Hodgson, Chester Dunn, June Schroeder and Lois McFalls. The Musicaires enter- tained us with toe tap- ping and spiritual music. We all enjoyed the jokes they told and "The Waltz Across Walmart" song. Musicaires members are Glen Diechert, Jim Love, George Lee and Ralph Stevenson. The meeting closed with "The Seniors Prayer." Next meeting is Oct. 4. We invite all seniors to come and join us for a pot -luck supper at 6 p.m. This week the Carroll's enjoyed the day with aunt and uncle Anne and Carfrey Cann at their home in Southcott Pines. "Complimentary apple cider and apples will be given to the participants," says Monk. There is no charge for the hike but donations are welcome in support of preserving this natural life area. "It's a great time for people to come out and enjoy," says Monk. The Gossipinhoose "The Gossiping Goose cafe where there is always light conversation that may not be true."
