Who should get the flu shot? Here's a list from the
Canadian National Advisory Committee on
Immunization: Healthy children from 6-23 months
and household contacts of those under two years of
age; pregnant women (the vaccine is safe in all
trimesters of pregnancy); healthcare workers... to help protect the people
they care for. As well, all people over 65 and those of any age who have a
chronic disease (cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc.). This shot is
available to all Ontario residents at no charge.
Leakage of urine due to sneezing, laughing or lifting (called stress
incontinence) can be a problem as we age. One good suggestion to avoid
this during a cough or sneeze is to cross your legs. This helps the pelvic
muscles and sphincters to keep the urine in the bladder.
If you have medication in your home that is no longer needed, bring
them to your pharmacy for safe disposal. Most pharmacies have access
to medical waste services whose personnel will incinerate the
medications. Incineration is the best and safest method to dispose of
medications and protect our environment.
Depression could be due to thyroid problems. Up to 20% of chronic
depression can result from an underactive thyroid. If you experience
changes in moods you can't explain, check with your doctor to rule out
thyroid causes.

By Nina Van Lieshout
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — A community cele-
bration dinner is coming up
Saturday and Sunday.
It's being hosted by Trivitt
Memorial Anglican Church in
Exeter.
"It'll be quite an event," says
organizer Friedholm Hoffman.
The church recently received $5
million dollars from the Mildred
Grimes estate.
The church is giving 10 per cent
of that money to the community.
"We were a poor church before,
we almost had to close our doors,"
says Hoffman.
"Now we can give back to the
community and give our thanks."
The church has donated some of
the money already.
They will also fund the Habitat
for Humanity in Huron, the South
Huron Hospital and Exeter Villa.
The church will announce at the
celebration how much money will
be designated for each one.
The event kicks off with a
Firemen's Breakfast at the Exeter
Fire Hall between 7 a.m. and 11
a.m. Saturday.
At 9 a.m. about 40 dif-
ferent organizers from
around the community
will be set up on Baldwin
Street.
"They'll be showcasing what they
do, giving information to the pub-
lic," says Hoffman.
Entertainment will also be a part
1E1A
of the activities.
A choir of about 40 people will
sing with support from the "Gerald
Fagan Singers" from London. An
orchestra will also be included.
There will be something for
everyone. "There's an entertain-
ment park," says Hoffman. "We'll
have face painting, crafts and more
for the children."
The celebration ends at 5 p.m.
y Saturday and starts again
11 Sunday at 3 p.m.
A special service of
Thanksgiving at the
Trivitt Memorial
Anglican Church will take place.
The Right Rev. Robert Bennett
Bishop of Norfolk will be at the cer-
emony.
The two day celebration is free.
Dow benefit raises over $22 ,000
LUCAN — Rain didn't
dampen the spirits of the
Lucan community on
Sept. 16.
Over $22,000 and still
counting was raised at
the benefit auction for 23 -
year -old Adam Dow.
Dow was fatally elec-
trocuted last month, leav-
ing behind his wife Kelly
and identical twin boys
Brandt and Brody.
The rain could have put
a damper on the evening
but with the help of Jeff
Rostenberg who donated
a tent and the Lucan
Biddulph Fire
Department and Lucan
Lions who supplied
another one, it was a suc-
cessful night.
Many volunteers put
together the benefit and
hundreds of people came
out to support the Dow
family.
The Knights of
Columbus, the Lucan
Optimist Club, businesses
and others also did their
part by collecting items
for the auction. A barbe-
cue and entertainment by
The River Junction Band
was also part of the bene-
fit.
