Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell and Blue Water Rest Home administrator Martha Craig made the announcement Monday afternoon. The project will see major improve- ments and renovations to the rest home, including new activities, service and dining rooms and a new kitchen. Residents will have bathrooms in each room and enough space for the equip- ment they need. "It's just huge news for us," Craig said, adding the goal is for the rest home to meet provincial "A" standards. How much of the $6 million the province will fund is yet to be deter- mined, but Mitchell said Blue Water was made eligible for funding through a spe- cial circumstances clause in the province's 2005 budget. In previous years, the rest home wasn't eligible because it didn't meet the province's criteria. Mitchell said the new clause recognized the fact that not every com- munity has the same requirements. While making the announcement, Mitchell recalled visiting Blue Water two years ago with then -Opposition Leader Dalton McGuinty, whom she described as "moved by the residents and their community." At the time, residents asked McGuinty to "save our home," and he ensured them they would receive the upgrades and funding neces- sary to stay open. "This is something I feel is very much needed here," Mitchell said of Blue Water. She pointed out Monday's funding announcement is the beginning of a long process and much work remains. The cause of the fire is probably electrical, according to Klopp. Among the losses were 350 pigs, estimated at a value of $25,000 plus over 170 round bales. The fire started sometime after 10:30 p.m. and was noticed by Heather Klopp Firefighters from Zurich, Dashwood and Bayfield responded to the fire, but could do little against it, except protect buildings around the barn. "We were fortunate it was a south wind...otherwise we would have had a real mess with the house and the barn being so close. It always could be worse," said Klopp. Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell, left, and Blue Water Rest Home administrator Martha Craig announced Monday major renovations and upgrades for the home to the tune of over $6 million.A yet -to -be -determined portion of the project will be funded by the province.
