One day film festival comes to Oakwood Inn
GRAND BEND - Who
says film festivals have to
take place in places like
Toronto, Venice and
Cannes?
The VON Palliative Care
Volunteer Program is get-
ting ready to host a film
festival of contemporary
movies at Oakwood Inn
Sept. 29.
Films scheduled for the
one -day Big Picture Film
Festival are "Wit" with
Emma Thompson, with
screenings at 1:30 p.m.
and 7 p.m; "The
Barbarian Invasions,"
winner of the 2003 Best
Foreign Film Oscar and
directed by Canadian
Denys Arcand, shown at
1:30 p.m.; and 2004 Best
Foreign Film Oscar win-
ner "The Sea Inside,"
with a screening at 7 p.m.
End of life issues are
featured as themes in the
one -day film festival,
sponsored by the Grand
Bend Foundation and
hosted by the VON
Palliative Care Volunteer
Program.
"These films, by recog-
nized, award-winning
filmmakers are an enter-
taining and serious look
at an issue we all must
face," said VON Palliative
Care Volunteer Program
chairperson Rev. Alun
Thomas, also a member
of the film festival's plan-
ning committee.
"The films we are
showing are up to date,
beautiful films, with
themes that challenge the
viewer to examine old
and new concepts," adds
VON volunteer co-ordina-
tor Karen Lehnen.
"The Barbarian
Invasions" explores cur-
rent trends in Canada's
health care system such
as bed shortages, waiting
lists and travel to the U.S.
for care. "Wit" and "The
Sea Inside" show quality
of life issues with exam-
ples of communication
and care giving styles.
Both "The Barbarian
Invasions" and "The Sea
Inside" touch on suicide
issues, although the VON
points out it does not sup-
port assisted suicide.
The films, through the
compelling journeys of
their characters, explore
fundamental questions
and challenge our beliefs.
Having the opportunity to
talk about the films after
each viewing is important
- sharing ideas and clar-
ifying topics on the end of
life can enhance the
understanding of a com-
plex and emotional topic.
"One of my professors
used to say, `Death edu-
cation is life affirming, -
VON bereavement con-
sultant Kim Winbow says.
Discussion groups after
each film will be led by
Grand Bend Community
Health Centre social
worker Micki Gurbin and
VON volunteer co-ordina-
tor and nurse Kelley
Phillips.
