South Huron Panther field hockey
EXETER — The South
Huron District High School
field hockey team took to
the field for the first time
on the weekend.
This year's field hockey
team is full of rookies, but
made a satisfactory start
to the season, being nar-
rowly defeated in the
semifinal of their first
tournament at Waterloo.
The girls had two wins
and two draws in pool
play.
In the first game against
Loyola, both teams were
full of jitters and the quali-
ty of hockey was not the
best.
It was a new experience
for most of the squad with
few returning starting
players and it allowed
them to get introduced to
the dynamics of the game.
The final score was 0-0
with Kaitlyn Haakvort
recording the shutout.
The girls faced Sir J. A.
MacDonald in the second
game and took the game
to them and were reward-
ed for their effort when
Lauren Haberer scored
with a strong shot.
Again Haakvort record-
ed the shutout and she
was ably assisted by her
defence of Michelle
McCann, Carly Schroeder,
rookie Keri Reschke and
stalwart Amy Weido.
Kristen Ferguson and
Kelly Cronyn recorded
strong performances.
The team had to play
Loyola again and this
time, they defeated them
1-0 with Janita Pfaff scor-
ing the lone marker.
The score could have
been more comfortable,
but many chances were
missed.
Rookie Michelle Boere
recorded the shutout.
In the final pool play
game, the girls played
Bluevale from Waterloo
for the right to advance to
the semifinal.
Bluevale scored in the
opening minutes and the
game seemed to settle
down, but the Panthers
rallied and Cronyn scored
the tying goal to allow the
girls to advance to the
semi.
In the semifinal game,
the girls faced Centennial
from Guelph, whose pool
play record was impres-
sive.
They scored an early
goal but the Panthers
played an excellent game,
even though they could
not find the net for the
equalizer.
Ninety per cent of the
play was in the Centennial
end, but inexperience in
scoring goals showed and
the final score was 1-0.
Overall, an excellent out-
ing for this young squad.
The regular Huron Perth
schedule started Monday
in Goderich, with the
locals providing the oppo-
sition at 2 p.m. and then
St. Armes at 3:20 p.m.
The team traveled to
Mitchell today
(Wednesday).
