2-0 Cup loss for Fury
EXETER — The Exeter
Fury split a pair of games
last week, losing an excit-
ing Cup game 2-0 Sept.
13 against the London
Portuguese while picking
up a 3-0 victory Sunday
versus Simcoe.
Sunday night at home
the Fury were the better
squad against the lowly
Simcoe team.
Exeter used crisp passes
to move the ball around
the field and set up
numerous scoring
chances.
Tim Hundey had a
chance in the first minute
when he walked in and
fired a shot high over the
net.
Exeter controlled the
play in the midfield which
set up the first goal of the
game.
Matt Prout sent a pass
to Matt Strano who went
in on a breakaway and
buried his first goal of the
season for a 1-0 Exeter
lead.
Starting the second half
up a goal the Fury
attempted to find the
insurance marker but
each trip down the field
resulted in a missed
opportunity.
Simcoe wasn't having
much luck at the other
end as Exeter's defence
held their opponents to
long shots from outside
the box which Prout han-
dled easily.
Craig Hern played a
strong game on defence
for the Fury by playing
aggressively, turning
away each challenger and
starting the play up field.
Ryan Carroll, who was a
force in the midfield all
game, had a solo effort
for the second Fury goal.
Carroll picked up the
ball in the offensive end
and dribbled with speed
past a couple of defenders
to break in alone and fire
a shot past the keeper for
the 2-0 lead.
Exeter's last goal was
set up by Strano who
dished a ball over to a
wide open Pete McAllister
at the top of the box.
McAllister took a couple
of steps and blasted a
shot off the far post and
into the net to seal the
victory.
The win gives the Fury
a record of 5-6-3, good
for fifth place and a point
out of fourth.
Tuesday in London
against the first place
Portuguese squad, the
Fury put forth a tremen-
dous effort as they
attempted to win the
Second Division Cup.
Their quest fell short as
the London team scored
two goals in the last nine
minutes to gain the win.
Exeter came out with a
plan to play solid defence
and wait for a breakdown
by the Portuguese
defence to try and pick up
a few scoring chances.
London had their best
chances in the first 20
minutes. scoring twice
but both goals were
called back due to offside
calls.
Exeter was in a defen-
sive shell at the start of
the game but late in the
first half the momentum
started to shift in Exeter's
favour.
By the second half the
Fury started to earn a few
offensive chances by tak-
ing advantage of break-
downs in the London end
of the field.
The Fury applied pres-
sure to the Portuguese
and eventually got the
break they needed with
about 15 minutes remain-
ing.
After a Portuguese
turnover, Strano attempt-
ed to play a bouncing ball
in behind the London
defence.
Strano tried to chip the
ball over the charging
keeper but the ball went
straight up in the air.
While Strano battled the
keeper taking him out of
the play, Pete McAllister
came racing in only to
head the all over the
empty net.
Having missed their
opportunity, the Fury had
their own breakdown five
minutes later resulting in
the lone goal the London
squad needed.
A rocket shot from a
bad angle a few minutes
later sealed the Cup win
for the Portuguese.
Tom Phouttharath was
outstanding in net for the
Fury, making several big
saves while under pres-
sure most of the game.
"We played our best
game Tuesday against a
tough team but we knew
that we may only get one
chance to score. We did-
n't capitalize but the guys
still played an amazing
game," team spokesman
Jason McFalls stated.
The Fury head out on
the road Friday night for
a trip to Delhi and then
finish the season Oct. 2 at
home.

WINGHAM — The
Exeter Hawks got off to
a slow start at the

The tournament was a

on the short end of a 6-

The Hawks were short
several players due to
baseball playoffs
They were missing
assistant coach Jeff
Finkbeiner, as well as
Jason Stuckless, Justin
Hayter, Scott Davies,
Craig Masse and Mike
Maclean.
Netting goals for the
Hawks were Justin

Howard said the
Pirates were just what
he expected from a
team coached by Press,
"hard working with no
quit in them."
Howard added it was
a goaltenders duel
between Thompson and
Pirates goalie Ryan
Jeffrey.
The Hawks came
away with the 3-2 win
on goals by Young and
Josh Liddle with Young
getting the winner at
8:56 of the third period.
Howard said he was
happy with the tourna-
ment except for the
slow start the team
had.

season in Mitchell
Friday night at 8:30
p.m.
Exeter will face last
year's champions, the
