5-4 win for Lucan Irish
LUCAN — The Lucan
Irish will be on the ice
tonight in Lucan
(Wednesday) as they
continue their exhibi-
tion schedule in prepa-
ration for the regular
season.
Head coach Jason
Heywood said there
have been fewer
younger players out to
the Irish camp.
"It sounds like all the
camps around have
been down," said
Heywood, referring to
the new rules on
underage players.
"It used to be where
you went out to camps
to see how you stacked
up. They can't even do
that anymore...It defi-
nitely had our numbers
down."
But Heywood said the
camp was competitive
and the team was
happy with its roster.
Lucan was making its
first cuts Monday night.
They were in Mt.
Brydges Saturday night
and came away with a
5-4 win.
The Irish will be at
home Wednesday night
to take on Mt. Brydges
again.
They will be in
Mitchell Friday night.
"I feel really good
behind the bench," said
Heywood.
"It's exciting to get to
know new players and
new people...down
there I've met a whole
new group of people.
"I can hardly wait to
start the season, that's
the biggest thing."
Express second at OBAs
WALLACEBURG — The
Exeter Express finished in
second at the OBA tourna-
ment in Wallaceburg over
the Labour day weekend.
"What happened?
Harrow had a better
team. They were lucky
and we couldn't get the
breaks when we needed
them. We didn't play up to
our total potential. There
is a hex on the team," said
Express team spokesman
Joe Fulop.
There were many posi-
tives and surprises
throughout the tourna-
ment according to Fulop.
This included the pitch-
ing performance by Scott
Kemp who won back to
back games.
Curtis Meyers shut down
the London team and
Derek Masse returned to
his old form in three relief
appearances.
The Express hitters were
on a roll throughout sev-
eral games led by the
homerun power of Nick
Regier and multi -hit
games by Vic Oliveira,
Lonnie Hawke, Aaron
Patterson, Bobby Grant,
Adam Leppington and
Regier.
The defence was solid
and included a double
play from Regier who
fielded the ball on his
knees to Aaron Patterson.
Patterson made another
play on a deflected ground
ball to nail the runner at
first base.
Game one saw Exeter
matched against the num-
ber one ranked team in
the tournament, Harrow.
There was some contro-
versy as two Exeter play-
ers were temporarily left
off the eligibility list from
the OBA.
This meant that Adam
Leppington couldn't start
the game and Jason Smith
didn't play at all due to a
technicality.
The Express lost 6-2.
Dan Masse took the loss
although he pitched well.
He allowed six runs of
which two were earned
and Ricky Regier relieved
allowing no runs.
The Express fell behind
early and rallied for runs
in the fifth and sixth
innings to close the gap to
5-2.
But they couldn't make
up the rest.
The team made four
errors and the best hitters
were Hawke with two and
Grant who had a hit and
three walks.
Patterson, Chris Smith,
Adam Leppington and
Justin Hayter had one hit
each.
The loss put the Express
in the loser's side of the
pool.
Game two was against
the London Stingrays and
the Express pounded out a
9-0 victory.
The team's production
was led by multiple hits
from Oliveira with three,
plus two each from Nick
Regier and Chris Smith.
Single hits came from
McConnell, Adam
Leppington, Hawke and
Patterson.
The Express scored
three runs in the first and
never looked back.
Curtis Meyers made his
debut in the senior play-
offs with a five -hit shutout.
This led to game three
against Bolton.
Exeter rallied for three
runs in the first, watched
while Bolton scored seven
in the same inning and
then rallied for 14 consec-
utive runs to win 17-7.
Derek Masse pitched five
innings of solid relief to
pick up the win. The
Express had 17 hits.
Adam Leppington, Grant
and Oliveira had three hits
each.
Those with two hits
included Nick Regier and
Patterson .
Contributing one hit
each were Hawke, Dan
Masse, Hayter and Chris
Smith.
Exeter received a bye in
the next game that meant
a tough schedule would
greet them on Sunday.
The Express had to play
consecutive games against
Mississauga, Mitchell and
Harrow with little rest
between games.
Mississauga jumped to a
one -run lead but the
Express demolished them
with 11 runs to win 11-1.
Kemp impressively held
the opposition to two
hits.while the Express
attack had 12 hits overall.
Game five was against
Mitchell.
Kemp started again and
pitched six innings allow-
ing one run on two hits.
Derek Masse relieved to
put down a last minute
Mitchell rally.
The Express managed to
get seven hits off Mitchell
pitcher Matt Hummell
who pitched his third
game of the tournament.
Leppington had one,
Regier had another home -
run, Grant had one.
Hawke and Masse each
had two hits.
The final against Harrow
started poorly as Exeter
fell behind 6-2.
Marty Merner didn't
have his best day lasting
three innings and allowing
all the rims.
Meyers, Ricky Regier
and Derek Masse complet-
ed the game.
From Exeter's point of
view the umpiring in this
game was particularly
bad as their pitchers were
charged with 10 walks,
while Harrow gave up
only two.
Questionable calls on the
base paths fired up the
Express as they rallied to
close the gap to 6 -5 head-
ing into the seventh
inning.
Adam Leppington made
a perfect bunt then stole
second easily in the eyes
of the Express players, the
second baseman who
tried to tag him and the
fans.
The umpire disagreed
calling him out and the
last ditch rally was effec-
tively ended.
The Express lost the
game 6-5.
For the second consecu-
tive season the Express
finished up with a tough
loss.
Fulop said three
unnamed players claimed
it was due to them and
their bad luck.
Fulop added "what is
apparent is the team has a
bright future if the core of
players returns next year.
Manager -coach Doug
Fairbairn already has
irons in the fire to find
new prospects said Fulop.
