1-0 win for Fury over Marconi
EXETER — The Exeter
Fury were victorious at
home Sunday night,
defeating Marconi 1-0.
The Fury played a com-
plete 90 minutes to gain
the three points.
Exeter defeated the third
place Marconi for the sec-
ond time this year while
the visitors lost for only
the third time overall this
season.
The first half was evenly
played with both teams
having chances to score.
Marconi had the best
chances from in close but
were unable to hit the net
on a few opportunities.
When they did manage
to place a shot on goal,
substitute keeper Tom
Phouttharath was in the
right position to make the
save.
Pete McAllister had the
best chance for the Fury
as he burst past the
defender and fired a shot
over the net.
As halftime approached
Pete Phouttharath
attempted to cut into the
goal area but was chopped
down by a Marconi
defender, resulting in a
penalty shot.
The play knocked
Phouttharath out of the
game with an ankle injury
but Ryan Carroll buried
the direct kick into the
corner for a 1-0 Fury lead
at the half.
Exeter controlled the
ball well in the second half
working it to the outside of
the field while finding the
open man for a run up the
sidelines.
Matt Strano was sent in
on a long breakaway and
managed to get a shot off
even after being caught by
a speedy Marconi player.
The Fury defence stayed
strong when Marconi
pressed for the equalizer.
Tom Phouttharath made
several big saves in net for
the Fury to earn the
shutout.
Justin Muller was also
solid on defence for
Exeter.
"The guys put in a com-
plete effort tonight and
everyone played a part in
the win," said team
spokesman Jason McFalls.
"Tom was excellent in
goal for us and managed
to be in the right spot to
make the save every
time," McFalls added.
The win gives Exeter a
record of 4-6-3, good for
fifth in the second Division
and only a point out of
fourth place.
