The Times Advocate, 2005-09-14, Page 3Wednesday,September 14, 2005 Exeter Times–Advocate Morleyrunning for warden By Scott Nixon The county warden sits as head of county council and TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF represents the county at a variety of functions, including union negotiations with county staff and representing Huron County at Queen's Park. "It's all part of the job," Morley says. "We really need to be voicing our needs in Toronto. I've been on council for 18 years ... and I've made a lot of connections in the provincial system and I don't think that will hurt me. I think that's a real bonus." Asked what the main county issues are, Morley says controlling tax increases are at the top of the list. "We've got to get that slowed down," he says, pointing out that counties are still dealing with provincial down- loading. Morley has spent the last two terms as South Huron's mayor, before which he spent 12 years on the former Usborne Township council, including three years as reeve and three as deputy reeve. He also chaired the transition board that oversaw the amalgamation of Exeter, Usborne and Stephen. SOUTH HURON — Rob Morley wants to be county warden. The South Huron mayor has thrown his hat into the ring, seeking a one-year term as Huron County warden. He'll find out Dec. 6 if he's successful. So far, Morley is the lone candidate for the job, which will be voted on by Huron County councillors. There are a couple of reasons Morley decided to go for the job. First, the upcoming warden term will coin- cide with Morley's last year as mayor for the current term. "If I'm going to do it, I've got to do it now," Morley says, "in case I'm not on county council next round." Morley has been on county council for eight years and he says "the ambition is to move up the ladder." Also, by becoming warden, he would be following in his father Bill Morley's footsteps — Morley's dad was county warden in 1980. Morley has been on county council for eight years, making himself and Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh's Ben Van Diepenbeek the only two councillors who have been on county council since before amalgamation, when Morley represented the former Usborne Township as reeve. Van Diepenbeek has already served a term as war- den. Morley, who runs his own trucking business, says the new position will make his schedule busier, but he'll have to make time for it. Walking for victims of Hurricane Katrina Hensall meeting By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF HENSALL — The meeting to present the Hensall business plan for a proposed deamal- gamation from the Municipality of Bluewater will be held Sept. 19 at the Hensall Community Centre. Deamalgamation com- mittee president Kay Wise said, "We've got the business plan ready and we're going to meet with the people of the village. They will take a vote as to whether they want to go farther after they've seen the fig- ures." The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. and Wise urged everyone to come out. "We really need their support on this, whether it is yes or no, it doesn't matter. We'd just like a lot of people there so we know that we've looked after a majority of the folks here." After the business plan is presented, a question and answer plan will fol- low. "From there, we'll see where we're going with it," said Wise.
