This is a good time to remind parents to check
the weight of their children's backpacks before
leaving for school. To avoid back strain, the pack
should not weight more than 15-20% of the
child's body weight. The packs should have two
padded shoulder straps as well as a hip strap to help distribute the
weight.
We recommend that most of your medications be taken with
water. Soft drinks and juices sometime yield enough acidity to
cause a drug to dissolve in the stomach rather than the intestine
resulting in poorer drug absorption.
Speaking of acidity, the pH scale is used to measure the acidity
and alkalinity. It ranges from 0-15 (from most acidic to most
alkaline). Each unit of change of this scale represents a ten -fold
change. So a substance with a pH of 5 is ten times more acidic
than a substance with a pH of 6.
When using eye drops, don't touch the eye with the tip of the
applicator bottle to keep it free from contamination.
In the 18th Century, Samuel Johnson said, "Knowledge is of two
kinds. We know a subject ourselves or we know where we can find
the information". You can be sure you can get reliable drug
information from our pharmacists. That's our job.

The Threat Is Real
Reduce the Risk of West Nile Virus
West Nile Virus is present in Huron County's bird population. As the days get
shorter and cooler, mosquitoes are still present and precautions are necessary.
How to prevent mosquitoes bites:
• Take precautions outdoors, especially in early morning, early evening and in
heavily wooded areas during the day, when mosquitoes are most active.
• Wear light-coloured clothing and cover up whenever possible.
• Use insect repellent containing DEET, and be sure to follow instructions on
the label.
• Reduce mosquito breeding sites by eliminating standing water around your
home (Le. change water in bird baths twice a week, clean eaves troughs
regularly, aerate ornamental ponds, etc.).
What the Health Unit is doing:
• The Health Unit will no longer be submitting dead birds for viral testing as we
have reached our limit. However, the Health Unit is still interested in
receiving dead bird sightings from the public.
• Mosquito trapping and viral testing will continue throughout the County until
the first frost.
