HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Times Advocate, 2005-09-07, Page 22 Exeter Times—Advocate Wednesday, September 7, 2005 Regional wrap up Hwiollspital renovate GODERICH — The Alexandra Marine and General Hospital board of directors received final approval from the provincial Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to go ahead with renova- tions. The hospital will receive a fire and life safety and operating room upgrade, according to the Goderich Signal -Star. The cost of the pro- ject is estimated at $5.9 million. It is scheduled to begin next week and will take approximately 12 months. The project will be separated into six dif- ferent phases. Daycare receives��n grant SEAFORTH — The Seaforth Cooperative Children's Centre received a $9,000 grant from the TD - Canada Trust Bank in Seaforth. According to The Huron Expositor, the money will be used to keep teachers current with their first aid and CPR training and also to attend different workshops that relate to special needs children. The money may also go towards teachers who wish to upgrade their skills by taking college or university level courses. The daycare fits in with the bank's focus on children, music and the environment. Arson suspected in $500,000 loss EXETER — A drainage plow owned by Hayter Contracting valued at $500,000 was destroyed in a suspicious fire out- side Exeter Aug. 31. Hayter contacted Huron OPP at 9:15 a.m Sept. 1 about a yellow 1999 Bron Drainage plow equipped with a GPS navigation and laser leveling equip- ment that had been left at a work site just off Thames Road and Hern Line in South Huron near Exeter. The fire was reported just before midnight to the South Huron Fire Department by neigh- bour Michele Hodgert when she noticed a fire far back in a field. Hodgert said she could smell rubber burning and see black smoke in the air. "It was quarter to 11 when I saw it and it was fully ablaze...It died down quite a bit before the fire department got there." When the fire depart- ment arrived they found the drainage plow on fire. The plow was com- pletely destroyed, according to the OPP. Workers had quit work at 6 p.m. Aug. 31 and the fire was found approxi- mately six hours later. The Fire Marshall's office was contacted and fire marshall Mike Owens Kirkton Fair this weekend KIRKTON — Fall fair season gets into swing this weekend with the annual Kirkton Fall Fair. Things get under way Friday night with the opening of the Kirkton-Woodham Community Centre at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, events kick off with the parade at 11 a.m. Other events (all at the Community Centre) include a 4-H achieve- ment day (beef and dairy), a "create a scare- crow" team event and an antique tractor display. The opening ceremonies follow the parade, after which the ever -popular pet show will take place. General admission to the fair is $5. Children under 12 get in free, but must be accompanied by an adult. The baby show starts at 12:30 p.m., fol- lowed by the talent show at 1 p.m. Other afternoon events include the Optimist pedal trac- tor pull at 2 p.m. and children's entertain- ment. Events for the day wrap up Saturday night with the Kirkton Fair Dance from 9 p.m. - 1 a.m. The demolition derby will start Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission prices are the same as on Saturday. Hessel byelection candidate By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF BAYFIELD — Nominations for the Bayfield byelection closed Aug. 29 with three candidates having declared themselves. Tyler Hessel of Bayfield is one of the three candidates running in the by election to replace former coun. Joshua McClinchey. Hessel has been a Bayfield resident for the past 25 years. After attending Huron centennial Public and Central Huron Secondary School, he went to Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. Hessel worked in international marketing and distri- bution with Patagonia Australia Inc before returning back to the Bayfield area. He is employed with the family business of Martin Wood Design with his brother and father in law. Hessel said one of his main issues is the Bayfield arena and he became involved in municipal politics when rumours surfaced about the potential closing of the arena. The byelection will be held Oct. 6. attended the scene in the late afternoon of Sept. 1. The cause of the fire is under investigation and is considered suspicious. Arson is suspected. Huron OPP are assist- ing the fire marshall in this fire and any informa- tion the public can pro- vide in this case will help. Call the Exeter OPP office or Crimestoppers with your information.
