New Stratford CT scanner unable to accommodate South Huron By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — Non -emergency South Huron patients will have to wait to access a new CT scanner at Stratford General Hospital. While it was recently announced the Stratford hospital had received the new scanner, the only South Huron patients able to access the new equipment are those in emergency or urgent situations. Other South Huron patients are being referred to London. The reason is a short- age of radiologists at the Stratford hospital. In a letter dated Aug. 29, Brenda Scott, pro- gram director for the Department of Medical Imaging wrote, "Due to the shortage of radiolo- gists, we are unable to accept referrals from physicians from outside the Alliance sites. This is an exceptional time and we hope that it is temporary." Hospitals in the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance include Stratford, St. Marys, Clinton and Seaforth. South Huron Hospital chief executive officer Debra Hunt said she expects the referrals to London will only be a short term issue. She said the new Stratford CT scanner was installed in August and, with new equipment, there is a learning curve. "Stratford only has 1.5 radiologists," she explained, adding the hospital is recruiting more radiologists. "It's a workload issue, and if they don't have the radiologist available to read the CTs, then the patients aren't going to get the service that they need. The patients need not only access to the CT, but they need access to a radiologist to interpret the CT." Hunt said local patients in emergency and urgent cases can still be referred to Stratford, while others are being referred to London, Kitchener and Owen Sound. She said she's not aware of the situation increasing waiting lists for local patients. "London has been very good to pick up our patients for us." Hunt added she does- n't think the situation has anything do with the fact South Huron Hospital isn't a mem- ber of the Alliance, but, "I believe what Stratford is doing is trying to service their own patients first ... and they're having difficulty doing that right now." The new CT scanner in Stratford is one of 26 replacements across Ontario. Designed to be more efficient, they are intended to reduce waiting lists and deliver an additional 81,268 scans across the province in 2005/06. "It's a workload issue, and if they don't have the radiologist available to read the CTs, then the patients aren't going to get the service that they need. The patients need not only access to the CT, but they need access to a radiologist to interpret the CT" DEBRA HUNT SOUTH HURON HOSPITAL CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Jay lost 47 pounds & 28 inches As our clients vary, so do their results. www.herbalmagic.ca ::g "I'VE TURNED BACK INTO THE GUY / USED TO BE."
