Fury rally to 1-1 tie for point
EXETER — On Aug. 27
the Fury made a road trip
to Cove Road in London to
face Benfica.
With only three spares,
the Fury ran into injury
troubles which depleted
the bench.
Although they finished
with only one spare, they
played a solid game which
ended in a 1-1 tie.
Both teams played well
in the first half with each
side having quality scoring
chances.
The Fury's second
makeshift keeper of the
season, Tom Phouttharath
made some strong saves
to keep the game scoreless
until late in the first half.
Benfica was awarded a
free kick from just outside
of the 18 -yard box and the
striker was able to put the
ball through Phouttharath
for a 1-0 lead going into
half time.
Exeter regrouped at half
time and came out playing
some spirited soccer.
The majority of the half
was played in the neutral
zone, with neither side
getting many chances to
score.
With about five minutes
left in the game, Ryan
Hern made a long free
kick into the goal area,
which was headed into the
net by Ben Willis -Leake to
even the score.
"It was a big point for us
considering that Benfica is
ahead of us in the stand-
ings," said team
spokesman Shawn
McFalls.
The Fury have a week
off before resuming action
on Sept. 11 at home vs.
Marconi.
