Wealth of talent for Hawks to pick from
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The
Exeter Hawks had a
wealth of young talent
to look over on the
weekend when their
potential rookies hit
the ice for tryouts at
the Stephen Arena.
Hawk's general man-
ager and head coach
Dale Howard said there
are at least five 16 year
olds who could step in
and play a regular shirt
in every game but the
Hawks can only pick
one.
The reason for the
limit is the new
`Canadian Model,'
which restricts teams
to one underage player
who must be local.
But Howard said the
team had an excellent
weekend."We're on
cloud nine right now.
"We're going to have
to turn some good kids
away.
"We had lots of good
kids and a good camp.
We're extremely happy
and we're back on the
ice tomorrow
(Tuesday).
With the rules only
allowing the Hawks to
select one 16 year,
Howard said the team
would take its time
making the pick.
"We want to make
100 per cent sure
because it's so close. It
might be one little
intangible that might
make a difference."
Howard said all of the
16 year olds would
probably go to
Wingham for the pre-
season tournament.
"That's going to be
our toughest decision,
and somebody to back
up (Justin) Hayter will
be the second toughest
decision."
The rookies had a full
weekend of drills, dry -
land training and
scrimmages plus power
skating lessons from
figure skating coach
Kathy
McLlwain,
"who power
skated those
boys until they
could barely
lift their legs,
" said Howard.
"These fella's prob-
ably were in bed when
they got home without
dinner." he added.
McLlwain will be
working with the team
throughout the season,
according to Howard.
"As a coach you're
worrying all the time
that you're not
going to have
enough. I think
we have plenty to
pick from.
"Lucky for me,
John (Rasenberg)
left the cupboard
quite stocked."
The Exeter Fury U1 I Boys soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the
U9 wrapup tournament Aug. 6 and lost in a heartbreaking double shoot out.The
team is back L -R: Scot Davidson, Lucas Walper, Stephen Boersma,Trevor Bryson,

Hogg getting stronger
on and off mound
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Exeter
pitcher Terry Hogg will be
starting his second
year at Graceland
University in Iowa
this September
with a stronger
arm and more
confident with a
full year under his
belt.
"Everything is
better," according
to Hogg.
He said he is
stronger mentally
and well as physically,
throwing 80 mph consis-
tently. and able to
increase to 82 or 83.
Hogg added he may be
able to increase it up to 90
in two or three years.
After finishing the school
year, Hogg played with
Stratford of the
Intercounty league, where
although he said "I got hit
like crazy, it was a great
experience."
After playing
with Stratford for
June and July,
Hogg came back
to the Exeter
Juniors for the
rest of the sum-
mer, as well as
the Express.
After a 6-7
record last sea-
son, Hogg said
the Graceland
team "wants to
get serious," this season.
"They have a lot of good
people and they want to
win...they want to make
the team the best."
After a slow start last
year due to an injured
arm at the beginning of
the season, the year
Terry
Hogg
improved for Hogg, with
six starts in the spring.
His first game on the
mound wasn't good
according to Hogg.
"They hit me hard...I
just didn't perform," but
his next game was better,
and was followed by a
complete game in his
third start.
While he said he would
have liked to play a varsi-
ty game last season, "it
wasn't going to happen."
But this season, the var-
sity squad is what he is
aiming at.
Hogg said the Graceland
coaching staff is tough but
fair.
"They can make you feel
small but you have to get
back out and perform. If
you can come back you
get respect from them."
In the Exeter U9 wrapup tournament Aug. 6 the Exeter #3 U9 team tied their
first game against Exeter#4 1-1 and won their second game against Grand
