10 Exeter Times—Advocate Wednesday,August 31, 2005 Exeter Express ready for OBA `D' tournament EXETER — The Exeter Express have been prac- ticing hard in preparation for the OBA 'D' tourna- ment in Wallaceburg this weekend. Twelve teams are involved in the double knockout format tourna- ment Express spokeman Joe Fulop provides a look at the team's chances: "The winning team might play as many as seven games over three days. The Express have solid pitching with Marty Merner and Dan Masse POLICE BRIEFS Theft in Exeter EXETER — OPP officers were called to Canadian Tire in Exeter on Aug. 26. An officer was told a man entered the business and took a bike down from the interior display. The man then took the bike to the front, telling the sales per- son he had permission to take it for a test drive. Stolen was a $700 black and blue Schwinn 240DSX 24 -speed mountain bike. The man is described as white, six feet tall, with a skinny appearance and about 19-22 years of age. Impaired charge EXETER — On Aug. 27 an officer stopped a blue 1936 Chevrolet on the Main Street of Exeter after a car show. The driver was arrested for impaired dri- ving after taking breath tests that indicated he was two times over the legal limit. The man from Kitchener will attend court in Exeter in October. being the workhorses during the regular sea- son. Newcomers Curtis Meyers and Jeff Erskine have both pitched very well when called upon. The defense is very strong led by Grant as the number one catcher. The infield is exception- al with few errors being made by any of Hawke,Nick Regier, Aaron Patterson, Scott Smith, Merner or Dan Masse. The outfield defense is blessed with a combina- tion of good arms and - speed. Terry Genttner, Adam Leppington, Vic Oliveira, Corey Burtch, Aaron Leppington, Chris Smith and Jason Smith will vie for starting spots along with the juniors men- tioned previously. Mike McConnell and Paul Walker will be look- ing for more playing time in a variety of positions. The Express have been second, third and first in the last three OBA tour- naments. They have several high average hitters in Regier, Hawke, Grant, Patterson, Leppington, Scott Smith, Hayter and Oliveira. Power has been shown most recently by Regier with Hawke, Leppington and Patterson doing the job as well. The team will need to play its best, hope the draw is not stacked against them too much and get a few breaks during the games if they want to be around for the final day of play.
