Juniors upset in playoff
EXETER — The Exeter
CO-OP/WK Juniors' sea-
son has ended early this
year.
"It was pretty disap-
pointing," mentioned
manager Jeff Keller. "But
we gave it a good run,"
Exeter was forced to
play a three -game series
against Mitchell to
advance to the annual
provincial tournament in
August.
This was the first time
the Ontario Baseball
Association required them
to do this.
"I really do not know
what they are thinking up
there in Toronto," said
Keller.
"They passed a new rule
that is really going to hurt
baseball in small-town
Ontario. They do not
want any more than one
team per affiliate going to
the OBA. These guys play
their hearts out all year to
go to the Provincials, and
now, for the first time in
history, they can't. It is a
shame. It really is."
The series was intense
and played well by both
sides.
Mitchell won the flip for
home -field advantage and
they took advantage of it.
with a win in the first
game 7-5 .
The game was played
well, however, Mitchell's
bats were hotter than
Exeter's and they scored
five of their seven runs in
one inning.
Exeter was in the lead 3-
0 when Mitchell scored
their five runs.
Jon Brand and Terry
Hogg pitched well for
Exeter.
Exeter turned on the
bats in game two, pound-
ing Mitchell at home 11-
2.
"I wish they hit like this
all year," said Keller.
Brand led the offensive
attack with two triples.
Tim Meidinger and
Justin Hayter contributed
a double and a single
each.
Mitch Iredale had two
singles and Matt Iredale
and Hogg each con-
tributed with a single.
The nail in the coffin for
Mitchell though was Dave
Gingerich's monster home
run in the fifth inning,
scoring three runs to put
the game out of reach for
Mitchell.
The fans also con-
tributed to the game said
Keller.
They came out in full -
force to cheer on the
Juniors for the game and
it was appreciated by the
team.
Ricky Regier got the
start for Exeter and
pitched magnificently
according to Keller.
Regier pitched the com-
plete game allowing two
runs on six hits and three
walks.
His defence helped him
out as well.
Exeter's defence was
strong in the game, turn-
ing three double -plays
and making no errors.
"This was one of the
best games of baseball I
have ever seen," men-
tioned Keller.
"The guys looked like a
championship team. They
looked unbeatable.
Everything just clicked.
The fans were unbeliev-
able as well, the loudest I
have every heard them. It
was great."
But game three was a
different story.
Playing late on a
Saturday night did not
bode well for Exeter, who
dropped game three 6-0.
"It was just one of those
days. It was a bad day to
have one of those days","
said Keller. "Nothing
worked for us."
The game was scoreless
until the fourth, when
Mitchell scored all six
runs.
Hogg came in and got
Exeter out of the inning
and pitched well to give
his team a chance to come
back.
However, Exeter could-
n't muster up any runs
and fell short.
"It was a great year,"
said Keller.
"Losing out like that was
disappointing. Mitchell is
a very good team. In fact,
they made it to the finals
last year, with the same
crew they have this year."
Keller thanked the busi-
nesses which supported
the team this year as well
as Brian Hogg for helping
out at every game.
"We could not have done
it without him,"said
Keller.
Other thanks go to Mike
Seip and Tim Meidinger
for taking coaching duties
and the fans who came
out to support the Juniors.
"It makes a huge differ-
ence with all that support
behind you," said Keller.
Lastly, Keller thanks the
players.
"You guys make the
team. You make it fun to
be involved. I appreciate
all the time and effort you
put into baseball and you
are the reason I have
stayed involved with the
Junior baseball program.
Thanks again guys for
another fun -filled and
exciting year of baseball."
Two losses for Exeter Fury
EXETER — The Exeter Fury dropped
two games this past week, losing 4-0 to
London Portuguese Aug. 14 and coming
out on the short end of a 2-0 score at
home Sunday versus Woodstock.
The game against London Portuguese
was closer than the score would indi-
cate.
Exeter stayed with them for the first
half and nearly scored when Matt Prout
took a shot, but he was unsuccessful in
finding the back of the net.
Exeter had a 10 -minute lapse in the
second half, as London Portuguese
turned their game up a notch.
London broke down the middle for
their first goal and converted on a cross-
ing play for their second.
They added goals number three and
four during this span as well.
"The game wasn't our best of the sea-
son, yet we were able to stick with the
first -place team, save for the ten minute
span in the second half," said team
spokesman Shawn McFalls.
"We'll have to play a solid 90 minutes if
we want to beat them in the cup final in
September."
On Sunday against Woodstock, the
Fury got off to a slow start.
"No one seemed to be into the game at
the beginning and that cost us," added
McFalls.
Woodstock got on the board when they
were awarded a free kick
The shooter made no mistake as he
buried his shot to give Woodstock a 1-0
lead.
A short while later, they scored their
second of the game on a fluke play.
Woodstock was awarded a penalty shot
stemming from a questionable foul.
Fury keeper Andrew Prout made the
save, yet as Exeter was trying to clear
the rebound, a defender was called for a
hand ball, giving Woodstock a second
penalty shot.
This time the shooter put the visitors
up 2-0.
Exeter played better in the second half,
but could not muster much offence.
"It was disappointing to see the effort
tonight," McFalls said
"On a positive note, Tim Hundey played
one of his better games. We need to play
better Saturday versus Benfica."
Seventy-five members of the Ironwood Junior Club played in the wrap-up tournament
at Ironwood Aug. 15. Ron Mabee and Matt Dietrich helped keep the club organized
throughout the season and a large group of volunteers joined in to help with the wrap-
up day.The group enjoyed free snacks, lunch and drinks donated to the club. Each play-
er received a group photo and gift certificate as well as donated door prizes were
