(photo/Pat Bolen) Booster seats mandatory HURON — With motor vehicle collisions the lead- ing cause of death and injury among children and youth according to a recent OPP news release, it's no wonder that as of Sept. 1 booster seats will be mandatory. Const. Don Shropshall of the Huron OPP says "booster seats can reduce the risk of death or injury as much as 75 per cent. That's why having children properly secured is no longer an option but the law as well." Anyone not com- plying with this new change will be assigned two demerit points, a $90 fine and a $20 victim fine surcharge for failing to use booster seats or for using them incorrectly. The Highway Traffic Act also states all drivers, including grandparents and babysitters must use child car seats or booster seats when transporting children, and it requires booster seats for small children who have out- grown child car seats but are still too small to be fully protected by seatbelts alone. Shropshall says "booster seats raise a child so the seatbelt will fit properly, avoiding soft areas such as the neck and abdomen, and crossing over the hip bones and chest bones which offer better protec- tion." He also stresses, "placing the shoulder belt behind your child's back or under the arm is not only an unsafe practice but a chargeable offence too." If your child weighs between 18 kg and 36 kg, is less than 145 cm (57 inches or 4'9" tall) and is less than eight years of age then the booster seat law affects you. Taxis, public vehicles, buses, emergency vehi- cles, vehicles on short- term lease and those from other jurisdictions will be exempt from the new child car seat requirements. Booster seats, according to the OPP are between $30 and $160. Shropshall says "a higher price does not guarantee a safer seat." Caregivers should not only ensure they know how to use the seat but that it includes a Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards label as well. To get more information about how to properly install child or booster seats, parents and care- givers should attend an inspection clinic. Two booster seat information clinics are coming up: Sept. 8 at Wal-Mart in Goderich from 6-8 p.m./ and Sept. 25 at McGee Motors on Suncoast Dr. in Goderich between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. r Capsule Comments by Ernie Miatello If you use those pressurized inhalers for breathing problems it's good to check your technique occasionally. Here's the recommended method of use: after shaking the inhaler, hold it one or two inches away from the mouth, exhale all the way then breathe in slowly as you squeeze the inhaler once. Hold your breath as long as comfortable (10 seconds is great). This helps get the medication into the airways. Exhale slowly. Follow this procedure with each inhalation. Rinse month afterwards if the inhaler is an anti-inflammatory medication. Since varicella vaccine was first introduced in 1995 to prevent chickenpox, there has been a 92% reduction in deaths in children due to the disease. There is a lot we can do to prevent cancer. For colorectal cancer, it's been shown that keeping intake of red meat to a minimum can reduce the risk of this type of cancer. Red meat includes all those tasty spiced meats like salami, ham, hot dogs, sausage and bacon. Out of all employed Canadians, 24% are daily smokers consuming an average of 17 cigarettes per day.
