Healthkick Huron gearing up in many ways for fall
By Nina Van Lieshout
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
HURON — "We're hoping Huron
County will be a role model for other
areas with this project," says Allison
Devereaux, project manager of
Healthkick Huron.
After receiving the June 28 fund-
ing announcement that $300,000 in
provincial funding would be put
towards the project and a donation
of $150,000 from the Seaforth
Community Development Trust
would also be contributed towards
Health -kick Huron, they're ready to
promote healthcare careers in
Huron County.
Healthkick Huron, otherwise
known as the Sharp Project (Skills
for Healthcare Attraction and
Retention Pilot project) focuses on
many areas of healthcare. It has
been in the works for the past two -
and -a -half -years. The six -pronged
project encourages high school stu-
dents to consider a healthcare
career, provides experience for
youth at local health facilities, offers
nursing training for the local work-
force, creates temporary work
placements for recent health gradu-
ates, makes the area attractive to
international medical graduates and
creates community ambassador
teams to promote the area.
In September, Health -kick Huron
will begin visting high schools in
Huron County promoting the project.
They'll even be placing students
interested in healthcare careers in
different pharmacies around the
area. According to Devereaux,
"everyone is very excited about
this."
A career night is also planned for
Huron County high schools and a
summer camp could be scheduled
for Grade 10 and 11 students show-
ing interest in healthcare careers.
So far, four people have been hired
to help out with this project. They
have been busy creating promotion-
al packages for healthcare profes-
sionals and their spouses which will
be handed out through the commu-
nity ambassador project, one of the
six prongs of Healthkick Huron.
They've also started conducting
interviews with local healthcare pro-
fessionals as part of a website
they're planning to launch, encour-
aging students to consider health-
care careers.
Another main focus right now is
recruiting and training volunteers.
Almost $15,000 of the provincial
funding will be used training 25 vol-
unteers. They're hoping for five vol-
unteers from each urban community
in Huron County, who will promote
the advantages of both living and
being employed in Huron County.
As far as the rural healthcare work
placement segment of the project, it
will receive about $90,000 of the
total, hiring 30 local youths for jobs
in the summer at Huron healthcare
facilities. Devereaux says "we'd like
people who care about healthcare
and who are passionate about the
community." High school students
wanting to volunteer may also put
their time spent towards their com-
munity service hours.
