EDMONTON — Four
members of the Exeter
Lawn Bowling Club
claimed medals at the
World Masters Games in
Edmonton in July.
Competing in the Men's
Pairs 'A' Division 60plus
category, Peter McFalls
and Colin McLuckie won
the gold medal July 24.
They also won a bronze
medal hi the Mixed Fours
'A' Division with partners
Shirley McLuckie and
Gloria McFalls.
With 21,285 athletes
registered, compared to
11,099 for the 2004
Olympics in Athens, the
Masters Games is billed
as the largest multi -sport
event in the world.
The games are typically
held every four years, but
Edmonton 2005 was the
exception.
The International
Masters Games
Association changed the
cycle of the event so it no
longer coincides with
other events such as the
Olympics or
Commonwealth Games.
The Games will revert to
the four-year cycle and
the next will be held in

Sydney, Australia in 2009.
Running from July 22-
31, Masters athletes are
usually at least 30 years
old, and there is no upper
age limit.
The oldest competitor in
Edmonton was Trent
Lane of Louisiana, who at
age 95 won the gold
medal in shot put.
Lane also plans on com-
peting in Sydney in 2009.
At the opening cere-
monies in Commonwealth
Stadium, Peter said
"there were thousands of
people. All the partici-
pants were sitting on one
side in various sections
wearing various coloured
shirts...there were reds
and yellows and blues
and greens taking up one
side of Commonwealth
Stadium.
"It was pretty spectacu-
lar, what they had going.
The Snowbirds flew over
a couple of times and
there was the (RCMP)
musical ride and all kinds
of entertainment down on
the field.
"Everyone was up doing
the wave when the
videotron would show
their section...it was very
positive."
Peter said the McFalls
registered a year and half
ago for the games after
seeing them advertised
while at the Canadian
Championships in Regina
in 2003.
The 2005 games were
the first year featuring
lawn bowling.

too early to tell yet about

Rookies hit the ice
at Hawks camp
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Up to 40 rookies looking to crack the
Exeter Hawks lineup will be put through their paces
on and off the ice Aug. 26-27 at Stephen Arena in
Huron Park.
Hawk's head coach Dale Howard said the team plans
on having its lineup close to being set before going to
the Wingham tournament Sept 1618.
The Hawks will start the season Sept. 23 in Mitchell.
Howard said the team is expecting back at least four
defencemen and two forward lines back but have
signed only one player yet, goalie Justin Hayter.
"He's not just the best on the Hawks, he's the best in
the league the past three or four years and has cham-
pionship experience. So I sleep a lot better knowing
he's already on the card," said Howard.
The Hawks have seven overagers this year and can
only pick three.
According to Howard, "that's probably the worst sit-
uation."
As well, under new rule changes, only one underage
player can be picked by a team and must be local.
"I've been out looking at a couple of the Exeter boys
and it's going to be a tough decision...if the other ones
that are out there we haven't seen yet are even half as
good, we're really going to be in for a tough decision.
"We're excited, and we want to get going...this is one
of the best coaching staffs I've ever had.
"Jeff (Finkbeiner) finished his coaching clinic last
Sunday so he's certified now...we've been out talking
to lots of kids so it's going to be a great year," said
Howard.
"I like to get out of the gate fast so we all get confi-
dent, but is that the be all and end all? No.
"I think we've got a team that can challenge, I really
do. Last year's first round was a bit of a disappoint-
ment and I think this team is better than that."
