Senior Rookies close in Mitchell
MITCHELL — On Aug.
6, the Exeter Senior
Rookie team traveled to
Mitchell to participate in
the W.O.B.A playoff and
O.B.A qualifying tourna-
ment.
After a slow start
Saturday morning, when
they were beat easily 24-
10 by Goderich, they
rebounded to play three
solid games.
With only nine players,
they won game two 22-8
over St. Marys and fol-
lowed that up with a well
fought victory over
Goderich 16-9.
The win over Goderich
qualified Exeter for the
O.B.A. tournament in
Kingsville.
Following the almost
consecutive games
against St. Marys &
Goderich, Exeter then
played a well -rested
Listowel team for the
W.O.B.A. finals.
After three close
innings, fatigue and a
strong Listowel team
proved to be too much for
Exeter and they were beat
21-10 after five innings.
Many thanks from the
coaching staff to the par-
ents brought their kids to
Mitchell.
The team played their
hearts out and will be
rewarded in Kingsville.
The coaches and par-
ents are very proud.

3-1 win advances Exeter Fury to Cup final
EXETER — On Aug. 3,
the Exeter Fury trav-
elled to London to face
Curinga in a Second
Division Cup semifinal
game and came away
with a 3-1 victory.
Both teams started out
strong, although
chances were limited in
the first few minutes of
play.
Curinga got on the
scoresheet first.
A ball crossed from the
right side found the foot
of the Curinga striker,
who promptly deposited
it in the lower right cor-
ner, out of the reach of
makeshift keeper,
Andrew Prout.
Prout was forced into
action when starting
keeper Nate Holmes
could not dress due to
an injury.
Exeter tied the game
before the half was
done, when Tom
Phouttharath finished
off a pass from Matt
Strano.
The Fury controlled
much of the play in the
second half.
Exeter made it a 2-1
game when they were
awarded a penalty shot.
Andrew Prout made no
mistake as he rifled a
shot to the lower left
corner of the net.
Prout had no time to
rest as shortly there-
after, Curinga was
awarded a penalty shot.
Prout guessed correct-
ly and made the save
before the defenders
cleared the ball out of
play.
Exeter put the game
out of reach on a nifty
free kick.
Pete Fragiskatos was
given the ball by Ryan
Carroll.
Fragiskatos then
crossed the ball into the
six-yard box where the
Curinga keeper couldn't
pick it up.
Matt Prout swept in
from the top of the 18 -
yard box and buried the
shot.
"We played a well bal-
anced game," according
to team spokesman
Shawn McFalls.
"We had our heads in
the game and didn't get
caught up in the trash
talking that Curinga
dished out."
"We are all looking
forward to the second
cup final in team histo-
ry"
Exeter last played in
the cup final (Third
Division) in 2001 when
they beat Ingersoll.
They will play London
Portuguese on a date to
be announced.
The Fury continued
their solid play from
their Cup win by defeat-
ing St. Thomas at home
Sunday night.
The Fury controlled
play in the offensive end
early in the contest and
had several good oppor-
tunities to score, but
failed to capitalize.
The Fury worked the
ball from one side of the
field to the other and
were able to create
openings in the early
minutes.
St. Thomas managed
to get one chance and
they made no mistake
by chipping the ball over
Fury keeper Prout.
Exeter struggled to
regain its confidence
after the goal and
trailed 1-0 at the half.
Joe Forrester suffered
a cut to the head in the
first half when he collid-
ed with a St. Thomas
player on an aggressive
play.
Forrester returned in
the second half only to
have the wound open up
again.
The second half saw
Exeter continue its
lethargic play until
Phouttharath fired a

long shot off the cross-
bar.
The near goal seemed
to spark the team and a
few minutes later
Phouttharath connected
with a header off a cor-
ner kick by Carroll.
The rejuvenated
Exeter squad kept
attacking and made
something happen when
Phouttharath fired a
long ball towards the
net.
Pete McAllister beat
the charging keeper to
the ball and headed it
over him into the net for
a 2-1 Fury lead.
The goal was the 50th
career goal for the sec-
ond leading scorer in
club history,
The Fury began to sit
back late in the contest
and St. Thomas came
close to tying the game.
A blistering shot from
the right side banged off
the post and came
directly back out where
it was cleared by the
Fury defence.
Exeter's defence was
solid except for the early
breakdown and kept the
strikers outside the box
and relied on Prout to
make the saves on long
shots.
The win gives Exeter a
record of 3-4-2, good for
fourth place in second
Division.
"The team played very
well tonight and were
the better squad for
most of the game,"
Jason McFalls said.
"We have a big game
against the first place
London Portuguese
Sunday and it will be a
good preview of the Cup
Final later on in the sea-
son," he added.
The Fury are in
London Sunday at 6
p.m.
