It was just the third time Southwest has lost this season. Ricky Regier, and the defence behind him, was the story of the game, getting the start for the Juniors who started the game in fifth place (out of 13 teams) in the London District standings. Regier pitched a com- plete game two -hit shutout for the Juniors, moving them up to fourth place in the standings. "Ricky just kept get- ting better as the night went on," said manager Jeff Keller. In fact, it worked so well the only two hits London got was a single in the first and another one in the sixth. Regier had seven strikeout, one walk and no runners got further than second base. "I felt great the whole game. In fact, the more I threw, the better I felt," commented Regier. "However, I owe a great deal to my defence behind me. They were like vacuums out there." Exeter's defence was perfect, not making an error. Keller said Terry Hogg dominated at shortstop, throwing out eight bat- ters. Chad Hackett also had a good game at second base, getting all three outs in the third inning. "The plays these guys were making were just fun to watch. It looked like they were playing a championship game. The whole team was pumped," said Keller. Although Exeter's bats were not as hot as Keller would like, they did manage to take advantage of every mis- take Southwest made and get the runners around the bases when they had to. Exeter's first run came in the third inning when Matt Iredale belted out a single to left field and scored on a throwing error and sacrifice fly by Steve Regier. Exeter added a couple of insurance runs in the sixth when Tim Meidinger hit a double in the gap in left centre and later scored on a double by Regier, help- ing his cause. Regier also scored Justin Hayter who reached base on a wild pitch. For the first time in several years the OBA didn't allow more than one team to the provin- cial championships from each affiliate league. Exeter and Mitchell squared off against each other last week for a best -of-three series to see who would get the honour to play in the year-end classic. But Mitchell took the series in three games with 7-5 and 6-0 wins. Tug -of -War championship GRAND BEND — The home side dominated the Canadian Tug -of -War championships Saturday in Grand Bend, with the Bluewater men's team winning every category. Bluewater tug-of-war member Matt Metzger described it as a "perfect weekend," with the men taking first in the 600, 640, 680, 720 and Catch divisions. The women's team took first in the Catch Weight and third in the 560 kilogram class. Only Ontario teams were at the champi- onship. Although in the past the tournament was used as a qualifier for the World Championships, no World Championship is being held this year. The Bluewater teams have a busy schedule planned with a trip to the Fergus Highland Games next weekend. They will also go to Milwaukee the last weekend in August as well as to the European Championships in Italy in September. Metzger said while they have had several new members join the men's team, Bluewater is still short of female pullers. Metzger added the attendance was good for the tournament with sev- eral full bleachers and people still standing.
