Never refuel engines inside a building or while the engine is hot or running. Avoid spontaneous combustion in hay by making certain that all hay is properly dried before putting it in the barn. All electrical installations and wiring should be inspected and approved by the hydro authority. Only burn rubbish in an incinerator equipped with a spark arrestor. The incinerator should be located about 30 m from any major buildings. All major farm buildings should be equipped with lightning rods in accordance with the provincial regu- lations. For Ontario farmers, information about the Lightning Rod Act is available at http://209.195.107.57/en/ Crop dryers should be equipped with adequate controls that will automatically shut off blowers or dampers when temperatures get too high. Pesticides should be stored in a separate building and clearly identified with a warning sign. Fuel should never be stored inside a building. Field burning should not be carried out under any circum- stances. Have your local fire department check your opera- tion regularly. Farm Safety facts It is estimated that every year in Canada there are 130 farm -related deaths, 1,200 people are hospitalized from farm -related injuries, and 50,000 people sustain farm -related Injuries requiring them to either seek medical attention or take a day away from normal work activities. Of all agriculture -related injuries, 65% of fatal injuries and 50% of injuries requiring hospitalization are related to the use of agricultural machinery. The very young and the elderly are at the greatest risk of injury on the farm. Heat stress, artery disease, hypertension, ulcers, and nervous disorders top the list of killers. America's farmers and ranchers have to cope with more stress than the average worker. Droughts, floods, pests, long hours, financial concerns, and other complications can lead to feelings of isolation and frustration. Experts agree that there are steps people can take to help cope with the stress in their lives. To help reduce stress, the National Safety Council suggests the following: Acknowledge that stress exists in your life. Don't minimize your reactions to stress.
