Grand Bend has two new businesses and a third in the works to tantalize your taste buds. Schoolhouse Restaurant, owned and operated by chef Augustyn Merkies and his sister Saskia Turner, opened June 22. It's located at 19 - 81 Crescent St., across from the post office. Extensive renovations have been completed inside the charming, old schoolhouse, originally built in 1874. The family restaurant seats 60 people and has an outdoor patio and private room on the lower level. Everything is made from scratch. The menu offers delectable dishes like stuffed pecan crusted breast of chicken to a hearty reuben sandwich. A popular attraction for seniors is the smaller appetites portion of the menu, great food at reasonable prices. The restaurant is open daily 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and reservations are recommended. • If you enjoy casual fine dining then F.I.N.E. restau- rant, at 42 Ontario St. may be your destination. Erryn Shephard is the owner of this new establish- ment which opened Aug. 2. Chef Ben Sandwith and his team will prepare any- thing from duck confit and poutine to homemade desserts and breads. How does a fresh donut dipped in a coffee -flavoured cream sauce sound? F.I.N.E has seating for 61 diners, including outdoor patio guests. Reservations are recommended. The restaurant is open 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. everyday except Sunday. General manager Melissa Nutt says extensive reno- vations are continuing and she hopes to be open by the end of August. The main floor, with a wrap around deck, will be a casual dining atmosphere featuring a hot/cold buffet. A smaller area, known as the sail room, will have its own fine dining menu. The lower level will consist of a beach level patio known as the Sandbar and a nightclub featuring live entertainment. The total capacity of the facility will be about 600 people. Oasis on the Beach will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday to Wednesday with extended hours on the weekend. Barbecue lunch after church service By Rhoda Rohde THAMES ROAD CORRESPONDENT THAMES ROAD — Judith Parker welcomed everyone to the Observer Sunday Church Service on Sunday morning. The Introit was sung. Parker lit the Christ Candle and everyone shook hands. Parker led in the call to worship responsively. Beatrice Dawson led in the Prayer of Approach, Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance all in unison. Sharon Passmore read the announcements and announced the hymn "Great Is Thy Faithfulness". Passmore read the Old Testament reading Exodus 16:9-18. Helen Weston led in the Responsive Psalm 118- 14-24 and Helen read from the New Testament Matthew 10:26-32. The choir sang "Close to Thee" accompanied by the organist Marilyn Vandenbussche. Karen Ellerington and Joan Morgan both spoke on "Faith" and everyone sang "Guide Me 0 Though Great Jehovah". Barry and Melonie Mlller received the offering as well as being greeters. Joan Skinner gave the Offertory Prayer and Prayers for the People and led in the Lord's Prayer. Everyone sang the dos- ing hymn "Love Divine All Loves Excelling". Joan Skinner gave the commis- sioning and the Benediction and everyone sang the closing chorus. After the service every- one went downstairs for a hot dog barbecue lunch and ice cream cones sponsored by the Joint Needs Assessment Committee. Personals Bill and Rohda Rohde and Oren Grace of Wyandotte, Michigan were Tuesday guests with Gordon and Myrtle Pengelly of Belgrave. It was good to see John Batten out to church after having undergone hip surgery recently. Bill and Rohde Rohde visited Sunday evening with Ross and Mildred Merrill of Bayfield.
