Pastor Elly Van Bergen welcomed the band and the rest of the congregation. During the commercial time Pastor Elly reminded everyone of the Open House Garden Party she is hosting at the Manse on Aug. 6 with rain date being Aug. 7from 2 - 4pm. Please bring your own lawn chairs. There will be angle parking on the lawn on the back street as well as parking on Mill Road. Everyone is welcome! Come on out and enjoy punch, cookies, fel- lowship and musical entertain- ment by Gladys Van Egmond. Jean Armstrong is recovering from hip surgery in Seaforth Hospital. Erin Keys announced she would be going to Mexico in two weeks for one year. She will be teaching English to Grade three. Congratulations and all the best to Erin! The children were amazed with VARNA NEWS 90th birthday wishes for former resident By Muriel Lewis GRANTON CORRESPONDENT GRANTON — Best 90th birthday wishes to Reta Standeaven as of July 29, who grew up near Granton and now lives in St. Marys. She still enjoys quilting and travelling. At the Granton Wesley United Church on Sun., July 31, Pastor Paul Vollick led the service. The message was entitled 'That sinking feeling' and the scripture lesson was from Matthew 14. Eric McRobert lit the Christ Candle. The children's hymn was `Teach me God to Wonder'. Support is needed for the Foodgrains Growing Project. Regular services resume at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Kirkton on Sun., Aug. 7 at 9:15 a.m. POLICE BRIEFS Sexual assault charge EXETER — A man walked into the Exeter ()PP office July 31 and told police he sexually assaulted his young stepdaughter. He said he lived with the girl in South Huron and he had sexually assaulted her several times between March and July of this year. The 50 -year-old was arrested and charged with sexual assault. He will appear in Exeter court Sept. 22. Thieves hit unlocked van EXETER — On July 30 an unlocked, white Astro van, left in a driveway near Alexander Street, was entered overnight. Police say a 16 -piece set of Wilson Opti -max golf clubs, a Wilson golf bag, one pair of Foot Joy golf shoes and a small amount of change were taken from the vehicle. Pizza store theft SOUTH HURON — On July 30 an employee of Scotty's Pizza on Airport Line in South Huron reported a break- in. Sometime through the night a window was forced open. A small amount of change and some product were removed. A candy machine inside the store was vandalized and its contents left on the floor. Zurich woman harassed ZURICH — On July 26 police arrested a man for crim- inal harassment in Zurich following a five-month inves- tigation. The man allegedly exhibited threatening behaviour, statements, actions and words. The victim is a Zurich resident. A 29 -year-old man from Bluewater is charged with two counts of criminal harassment. The message reflecting on Scripture "The Good 01 Samaritan" was acted out by Pastor Elly, Joe and Willi Laurie and Rob Robilliard. Following the service, a pot luck lunch was served and enjoyed by all. Thanks to to Exeter Community Band for sharing their musical gifts and fellowship. Guess the peppermints contest was won by Everette Van Slighenhorst. There will not be worship ser- vices at Varna or Goshen until Sund., Sept. 11. Please visit other neighbouring churches. Euchre winners in Zurich ZURICH — Zurich din- ers enjoyed meals pre- pared by Mary Koricina and volunteers. 50/50 draws were won by Elaine Weido, Glena Olcen and Lee Regier. Flowers decorated the tables and were taken home by Olivea Bedard and Lottie Grenier. Marg Hayter has wel- comed everyone at each meal and led in the singing of Oh Canada and the grace with Glena Olcen at the piano with Audrey Haberer fill- ing in last week. Readings have been read by Olcen "What is a Grandpa". July 6 progressive euchre was played with three persons tied for high, Marjorie Reichert, Ursula Regier and Gwen McKellar. Lone hands went to Josephine Denomme. July 20 there was a guest speaker. Judy Dougall talked and demonstrated laughter and Yoga. July 27 bingo was played with winners Lottie Grenier, Fred Haberer (2Wins), Audrey Haberer, Theresa Regier, Olivea Bedard, Helen MacLean and with full card receiving a TV dinner Marie Whitney. For a Lucan-area woman it happened July 23 at Ironwood Golf Club in Exeter. Janet Mason was taking part in the Lucan Firefighters golf tourna- ment. She took a swing with her three iron on the HOLE -IN -ONE hoeb(100 x yards) to land a hole -in -one. Mason shared her victory with team members Jeff Campbell, Miranda Hayter and Mila Loyens. WE DID A LOT OF EXPERIMENTING AND RECIPE SCANNING AND THEN PROCEEDED TO HAVE SOME AWESOME GOURMET TYPE MEALS. THE FOLLOWING RECIPE IS ONE OF THE TRYOUTS THAT WAS A REAL NEW TWIST ON SCALLOPED POTATOES. THE POTATOES WERE WONDERFUL! THANKS MEL FOR SHARING SO MANY GOOD TIMES IN THE KITCHEN WITH ME! SIMPLE BAKED POTATOES scrubbed and sliced new potatoes sliced red onion sliced tomato garlic cloves fresh herbs (thyme, parsley) grated cheese olive oil Lightly saute onion slices and garlic in a small bit of oil `til just tender, add fresh herbs to the mix. Then layer starting with onion, herbs and garlic, then potato, then tomato and lastly cheese. Do the layering twice in a well greased pan. Drizzle olive oil over the whole pan scantly. Prepare as much as needed for the number you are serving. Bake in 350 deg. oven covered with tinfoil `til last 10 minutes. Serve hot and enjoy. We used a combination of old cheddar and asiago cheese. GRAND BEND SEWAGE TREATMENT FACILITY MASTER PLAN Lambton Shores, South Huron, Dashwood, Bluewater Lakeshore PUBLIC INFORMATION CENTRE The Municipality of Lambton Shores, in partnership with the Municipalities of South Huron and Bluewater, retained Dillon Consulting Limited to prepare a comprehensive, long-range (20 years plus) Master Plan for providing municipal sanitary sewage servicing for the area surrounding Grand Bend, as shown on the map. The study is being completed according to the requirements of the "Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA)" (June 2000) for Master Plans.
