Biologist hired By Stephanie Mandziuk TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority has hired Kari Killins as its new acquatic biologist. She replaces Jamie Stewart who has accepted a position in Kingston as a biologist with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. Killins will be actively involved in the Ausable River Recovery Strategy as well as water quality and fish habitat assessment projects within the water- shed. "Water sampling is quite important because it gives us long-term information concerning the health of the watershed," says Killins. Before joining the ABCA, Killins worked for the Grand River Conservation Authority for three years. Several reasons to maintain your vehicle The family vehicle is a major investment, and there are some simple steps that can extend the life of your car or truck, save money and help you meet the One -Tonne Challenge and give everyone cleaner air. The One -Tonne Challenge asks each Canadian to take action on climate change by reducing personal green- house gas emissions by one tonne, or about 20 per cent. Each Canadian generates, on average, five tonnes of green- house gases annually. Most maintenance should be left to profes- sionals, and the owner's manual is the best guide. Follow the schedule for oil changes, engine and brake checks, and tests on cooling, ignition, emission control and dri- vetrain systems. Then set up a routine for some easy steps that can head off costly problems, and reduce emissions at the same time. Drive green Some provinces require an emissions equipment check-up as part of vehicle registra- tion, but Environment Canada's Let's Drive Green program also offers free clinics all over Canada each summer where you can drive through and get a quick tailpipe emissions test. A full schedule of clinics can be found online at www.ec.gc.ca/transport/c linics. Program cancelled in August EXETER — Throughout the month of July, key- board musicians were Jean Hodgert and Josie Ryckman. A 50-50 draw prize was won by Harry Klungel and Martin Andrew. Regular draw prizes were won by Earl Deichert, Phyllis Deichert and Ghislaine Wydoogie. We sent $75.50 to the Brain Tumour Society which I am sure will be put to good use. On July 5th we had Maggie Brennan speak from the Alzeheimers Society. Marlene Thornton sang several songs on July 12th. On July 19th Ross Proctor showed slides from a cat- tle drive. Corky Bedard and friends performed on July 26th. Foot care appointments can be made by contacting 235-0258. The next appointment dates will be August 2/16 and September 6/20. Our exercise program will be done for the month of August but we hope to see you again in September. Tyler Tyler is a helpful 10 year old who loves wood working & mechan- ics. FOR INFORMATION ON OUR VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS, CALL OUR OFFICE AT 235- 3307 OR VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT www.shbbbs.on.ca. Check the tires Make sure to measure your tire pressure monthly. Under -inflated tires make the vehicle work harder and increase fuel consump- tion. Each tire that is under -inflated by two psi (14 kPa) causes a one per cent increase in fuel consumption. Learn more at www.betires- mart.ca. Monthly checks you can do yourself In addition to measur- ing tire pressure, there are some other easy monthly checks. Look around and under the car for fluid leaks, check fluid levels and check under the hood for cracked wires and hoses. Do a simple brake test by choosing a straight, flat and traffic -free stretch of road, then rest your hands lightly on the steering wheel and apply the brakes gradually. If the vehicle swerves to one side, one of the brake linings may be worn or an adjustment is needed. A similar test can be used to check wheel alignment. Identify some actions you can take to reduce emissions, and start tak- ing the One -Tonne Challenge. The Auto$mart Guide con- tains plenty of informa- tion on vehicle mainte- nance that saves money, reduces emissions and protects your investment. The Guide to the One - Tonne Challenge also has ideas and explains how to make the Challenge part of your life. Ask for the Guides by calling 1 -800 -0 -Canada. For Internet users, the Auto$mart Guide is at www.oee.nrcan.gc.ca and click on the personal transportation link. The One -Tonne Challenge Guide is at www.one- tonne.gc.ca.
