CREDITON — Elisha Martene has
turned her passion for horses into art.
The 22 -year-old Crediton resident, a
recent graduate of Ridgetown College's
Agriculture Diploma program, has been
drawing since she was a child, but has
become increasingly seri-
ous about her art in the
last couple of years.
Martene is a mostly self-
taught artist, although she
has taken some art cours-
es where she learned
techniques, styles of art
and how to use water-
colours and acrylics. She
enjoys acrylic paints the
most because they show
off strong detail and dry
quickly.
Martene says lately she's
been painting every night and most
pieces of art take her about a week to
complete.
Martene has painted numerous por-
traits of pets owned by friends and family
members. Much of her talent lines the
walls of her parents Clare and Brenda's
home.
Martene has displayed her artwork at
the Huron County Museum in Goderich
and has won Viewer's Choice for the last
two years at the Exeter Fall Fair.
And for the first time, she'll have a dis-
play set up at the Exeter Rodeo Saturday
and Sunday where some of her pieces
will be for sale. She'll also have business
cards and information sheets for anyone
interested in having her do portraits of
their pets. Martene mostly uses pho-
tographs as the model for her paintings
and all of her works are originals. In
addition to paintings, Martene also
designs and paints tack boxes and name
plates for horse stalls.
And while horses remain
Martene's main interest,
she does other animals as
well — cows, dogs and cats,
for example.
"I try to portray the ani-
mal as realistically and
accurately as possible. I
pay close attention to detail
and try to capture the per-
sonality and individuality of
every animal I paint,"
Martene says, adding
painting is a stress relief for
her and she enjoys seeing the look on
people's faces when they see one of her
finished pieces of art.
Painting is something she may pursue
professionally in the future, but right now
Martene describes it as a hobby while she
works in the agriculture industry. She
eventually intends to take more art and
photography courses and learn how to do
her own framing.
And if there is enough interest in her
art, Martene is thinking of opening up a
room in her parents' home so people can
come in and see her work on display.
"I try to portray the
animal as realistically
and accurately as
possible. I pay close
attention to detail and
try to capture the
personality and
individuality of every
animal I paint"

ST. MARYS— Por Favor, say St.
Marys-Kirkton group.
St. Marys-Kirkton Pathfmders (the
older group of Girl Guides) had great
fun making St Marys residents' cars
sparkle in the bright summer sun
recently.
They also, due to overwhelming gen-
erosity, were able to raise nearly $300
towards their trip next year to Mexico.
In August 2006 the Pathfinders, six
girls and their two leaders, will visit the
International Guernovaca Girl Guide
Centre, near Mexico City where they will
meet up with over 100 different
Pathfinder groups from all over the
globe. Pathfinders would like to thank
Simoniz for supplying all the car wash
products and Trish and Peter Puglia and
the Canadian Tire Store for generously
supporting the event.
