Page 12 10 TIMES ADVOCATE Wednesday, July 27, 2005 Express get closer to .500 EXETER — The Express didn't do it the easy way but they were able to defeat Listowel 7 - 6 in an exciting contest July 20 in Listowel. The Express had 16 hits led by the returning Derek Masse who went four for four. Other top hitters were Nick Regier and Scott Smith with three each while Bobby Grant, Dan Masse and Terry Genttner had two each. Aaron Patterson had one hit and two stolen bases. Leaving 10 men on base and a couple of base running errors kept the score closer than it should have been. The Express scored one run in the second on hits by Dan Masse (a triple) and Smith (a double). They added two more in the third on hits by Smith, Regier and Grant(a double) plus two stolen bases by Regier and Smith. Listowel replied with one run in the fourth on a home run. The Express added runs in the fifth and sixth innings on hits by Regier, Dan Masse and Derek Masse plus a perfect sui- cide squeeze bunt by Aaron Patterson. Listowel added one in the sixth and the Express seemed to have the game in hand as they entered the bottom of the eighth. However Listowel rallied against Marty Merner for four runs to take the lead. Merner pitched seven plus innings allowing only six hits and had six walks. He didn't have his best stuff on this night but gutted it out when the pressure was on to keep Listowel at bay until the eighth. The Express rallied for two in the ninth on hits by Grant and Regier plus a pair of excellent bunts by Masse and Smith (the second was a suicide Vic Oliveira of the Exeter Express swings hard during his team's 2-1 victory over the St.Thomas Elgins at home July 22. Dan Masse relieved for the last two innings, allowing one hit and one walk — enough to hold onto the win. The game featured some good old fashioned baseball with lots of steals (Exeter had six) plus suicide bunts and some daring base running. The Express extended their winning streak with a well deserved win against St. Thomas July 22 by a score of 2 - 1. It was a well played game with several excellent defensive plays by both teams. The Express defense was highlighted by three superb plays on difficult to play ground balls by shortstop Patterson. Plus that, there was a heads up play by catcher Grant and second baseman Regier as they turned a pop fly into a double play. Dan Masse won his sec- ond game in three days, holding St. Thomas to one nm on five scattered hits while striking out five batters — whenever he had to he dug down and stopped any potential ral- lies. Exeter scored in the fourth on a single by Dan Masse, a fielder's choice, a steal by Patterson and a rocket-like double to centre field by Vic Oliveira. St. Thomas managed to tie the game in the fifth on two hits. Centre fielder Adam Leppington hit a long home run into a strong left field breeze in the seventh to put the Express ahead for good. Other hits came from Lonnie Hawke with a triple and a single, two from Dan Masse, one from Regier and a double by Patterson. The team record after last Friday's game was six and nine. The teams to catch are both at .500 records. Shaw successful in Florida FLORIDA — Exeter native Dave Shaw and his wife Trish have success- fully passed their athletic talents on to their children. All are excelling in their chosen fields, including eldest daughter Jamie. Each year, the American Athletic Union (AAU) sponsors a basketball tournament in Orlando, Fla., at Disney World's Wide World of Sport. Jamie made the South Carolina (Columbia) team and entered the 10 - day tourney that was composed of more than 50 teams from across the United States. Jamie played in all 10 games averaging over 20 points a game. The final, against a team from Boston, was a nail -biter. Columbia won 51-49 with Jamie scoring 17 points. As with many teenagers across North America, these young girls are excited about the prospects of the future as scouts from many American universi- ties and colleges flock to this tourna- ment in hopes of spotting future stars for their campuses. At 15 and in Grade 10, Jamie has already been scouted, with the hope that her post -secondary education is virtually secured already. Both Jamie and her 12 -year-old sis- ter, Danielle, will return to Orlando in September, representing South Carolina to compete in the AAU national soccer championships. SPORTS TIPS?
