(photo/submitted) By Pat Bolen TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF NOTRE DAME — After 11 years as head coach of the hockey team at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island, former Exeter resident Paul Pooley will be behind the bench for another team when the season opens this fall. Pooley has accepted a position as associate head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, where he will reunite with head coach Jeff Jackson, who he coached with at Lake Superior State from 1992- 94. Pooley coached Providence College to a combined 185-187-40 record, winning the Hockey East title in 1995- 96 while making two trips to the NCAA tournament in 1996 and 2001. He was the 2001 Hockey East and New England coach of the year and a two-time finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award as the national coach of the year. Pooley was born and raised in Exeter, before moving away at the age of 17 to Toronto. He became involved in coaching after volunteer- ing at Ohio State where he was a full time assistant for three years. Pooley was asked by Jackson in 1992 if he would be interested in a position at Lake Superior State in Duluth, Minnesota. By his last year at Lake Superior, Pooley felt he was ready for a head coaching position when the job at Providence became available. Under Pooley's direction, Providence had their best season in 2000-2001, when they fin- ished second, which was the best the team had ever placed. `I learned a lot and met a lot of tremendous people and coached a lot of great players. I've had a lot of fond memories," said Pooley. Moving to Notre Dame came about after Jackson was made the head coach of the team and asked Pooley if he was interest- ed in joining him. "I was look- ing for a little bit of a change... and decided it was something we wanted to do and made that decision." Although Pooley said moving from being head coach to an associate coaching posi- tion was the most difficult part of the move, the chance to work with Jackson again made the "I was looking for a little bit of a change...and decided it was something we wanted to do and made that decision." ASSOCIATE H N FIPAUL PooI.EY EAD COACH OTRE DAME FIG IRISH decision easier. "Notre Dame itself is a tremendous institution, probably one of the most recognized names in the world. There is a lot of potential to be very suc- cessful at Notre Dame if things fall into place." Pooley said the team he is joining lost several play- ers last season and is a young team. "That's what is exciting with a new coaching staff. You can put some things in and the players are probably a little bit more in tune." While he said he would like to be back behind the bench as a head coach at some point, Pooley said the experience with Notre Dame will be fun. "It will be challenging...as well as to be able to work with a guy you consider to be your mentor." 12-3 loss for Express to Bulls EXETER — The playoff hopes of the Express were dimmed again as they lost 12-3 to the London Bulls for the fourth time Friday night in Exeter. Curtis Meyers drew the assignment against the Bulls and pitched a decent game allowing nine runs on 11 hits. Lonnie Hawke pitched one inning of scoreless relief as did Bobby Grant. Aaron Patterson was stung for four runs during his one inning stint. In total the Bulls, who have a powerful lineup, bashed out 16 hits. The Express tried to rally but were held to three runs in the eighth inning when the game was out of hand. During the game the Express were able to muster only six hits. Aaron Patterson had two, with one each from Hawke, Adam Leppington, Nick Regier and Marty Merner. The team has a record of 4-9. It is hoped the return of Curtis Meyers delivers for the Exeter Express July 15 against the London BuIIs.The Express came out on the short end of a 12-3 score. (photo/Pat Bolen) Derek Masse and Aaron Leppington plus the recov- ery from injuries for sev- eral players will turn the team's fortunes around. When everyone is there the team offers good pitching, a solid defense and several good hitters. It is hoped and expected by manager Doug Fairbairn that better days are ahead. The Express game against Strathroy was rained out. They play in Listowel tonight (Wednesday) and have a home and home schedule with St. Thomas Friday and Sunday.
