Pocket bikes are a tiny danger
The following article was
submitted by Huron OPP
Const. Don Shropshall
HURON COUNTY —
They're been referred to
as "ground base missiles
with hair-trigger acceler-
ation" and they're the
hottest item on two
wheels although those
wheels can't even touch a
public road.
Known as pocket bikes,
the mini -motorcycle
stands about knee-high,
weighs up to 30 kilo-
grams and has a buzzy
engine whose displace-
ment goes as high as 49
cubic centimeters.
They are relatively
cheap and some modified
models can hit speeds of
90 km/h.
They're styled after
choppers or full size rac-
ing motorcycles. Some
have realistic accessories
such as lights, turn sig -

Goderich
EXETER — The Exeter
Bantams had a busy
week, with a 12-5 win
at home over Goderich
July 9 before taking part
in a tournament on the
weekend in Kincardine.
Exeter came out on
the shortend of a 17-12
game against Halton
and 9-7 against
Orangeville before
rebounding for a 12-6
doubling against
Waterloo.
James Marsden had
three home runs over
the weekend for Exeter
with Steve Masse con-
tributing three doubles
as well as good pitching.
Also throwing well for
Exeter were Jayden
Desjardine, Scott
Overholt, Marsden and
Mike Giles.
The action gives
Exeter a record of 16
wins and eight losses in
league and tournament
games.

In response to the fast
growing popularity of the
two -wheeled bikes, the
Canada Safety Council
and Transport Canada
have a message — the
machines are not street
legal. You can only oper-
ate them on private prop-
erty.
These bikes are just too
small. When a trucker is
waiting at a light, he/she
can't see you and neither
can other motorists. The
bike then becomes a dan-
ger on roadways, a dan-
ger to other motorists and
a danger to the person
riding it.
The bikes can be pur-
chased by anyone and
can be driven without a
license, registration or
insurance. Remember
though, they cannot legal-
ly be driven on a public
roadway.
Police have experienced
problems with reckless-
ness in areas where these
bikes are used on public
roads. Kids have been
racing on roadways,
speeding up and down
streets and failing to stop
for posted stop signs.
They're also coming close
to hitting other children
on streets and sidewalks.
Huron OPP are investi-
gating potential charges
against several operators
of these bikes. They
include: driving a motor
vehicle with no insurance,
failing to wear a helmet,
failing to have proper side
marker lamps, improper
license/no license,no
license plates, no regis-
tration and driving on a
highway with improper
tires.
Police have a warning to
parents: restrict the oper-
ation of these pocket
bikes and be present
when they're in use.
