HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Times Advocate, 2005-07-11, Page 88 Exeter Times—Advocate Wednesday,July 13, 2005 Six members of family welcomed in Varna By Joan Beierling VARNA CORRESPONDENT VARNA — The congre- gation of Varna -Goshen along with many guests welcomed six members of the Nguyen family back into their midst this past Sunday in a 25th anniversary ser- vice. On behalf of her fami- ly, Hiep Nguyen remi- nisced saying that: "It was warm and sunny, summer had just begun. And so had the lives of five Vietnamese immi- grants who arrived in Canada in June 1980." Perilous escape Hiep spoke of their perilous escape from Vietnam in a small boat, and at first the over- whelming welcome from the Varna Goshen Pastoral Charge and the community. Over the past 25 years the family have adjusted and done well. Hiep continued to teach, her husband Tai became a certified machinist and they live in Toronto. Their two sons Thuy and Dung, graduated from Universities in Toronto and are both married. Thuy and his wife Nicole and children Jordan and Matthew live in Philadelphia. Dung and his wife, Aileen and daughter Danielle also live in Toronto. Rev. Wilena Brown, who was the organizing force to the family's sponsorship, was unable to be at the service because of health prob- lems, but sent her best wishes along with Mary and Bill Chessell for- merly of Varna. Members of the com- mittee who worked with Rev. Brown, Gordon and Ruby Hill, Geraldine Eckel and Joyce Dowson took part in the service. Much to Hiep's sur- prise her former princi- pal, Ralph Smith from when she taught at Goderich was also at the service. Later, another teach- ing colleague John Siertsema and his wife Kathleen and former neighbours Wayne and Shirley Taylor joined everyone for a picnic potluck lunch at the Complex. With heartfelt love With heartfelt love and gratitude the Nguyen family present- ed everyone with bright blue thank you ribbons, a commemorative plaque, a beautiful scrapbook of stories and pictures for both churches and a renewed promise to continue to stay in touch with their "very own Canadian family at Varna - Goshen." LCBO theft in Hensall HENSALL — On July 8 at 3 a.m. OPP responded to an alarm at the LCBO Store on Highway 4 north of Hensall. The front win- dow of the door had been smashed. Once inside thieves removed 37 bottles of alcohol: 11- 60 oz bot- tles of Alberta Premium, 7- 40 oz bottles of Royal Reserve, 6- 26 oz bottles of Hpnotiq liqueur, 4- 13 oz bottles of Hpnotiq liqueur, 4- 60 oz bottles of Crown Royal, 3- 60 oz bottles of Royal Reserve and 2- 60 oz bottles of Wiser Deluxe.
