Express slump in tou
EXETER — The Exeter
Express ended the most
difficult part of their
schedule (10 games in
17 days) with two losses.
They lost a tough one
to the London Bulls 7-6
June 28 and dropped a
13-1 blowout to the
Lakeside Lizards June
29.
The team has a break
until the Lakeside tour-
nament next weekend.
The game against the
Bulls was a pitchers duel
until the eighth and
ninth innings.
The Express scored
two runs in the first on
hits by Adam
Leppington, Lonnie
Hawke and Vic Oliveira.
Curtis Meyers did an
exceptional job control-
ling the Bulls' potent
bats, allowing only two
runs on five hits till the
eighth.
After tiring Meyers was
replaced by Paul Elston
who was the victim of
Sports
some seeing -eye -hits
and errors in his inning
and the Bulls took a 7-2
lead.
In the ninth the
Express rallied for four
runs on hits by Paul
Walker, Scott Smith and
Terry Genttner, plus
walks to Leppington and
Bobby Grant.
The winning runs were
on base as the game
ended.
The defensive play of
the game occurred as an
19
stretch with two losses
errant throw to first
base on a double play
attempt was scooped up
by covering catcher
Grant.
He threw to shortstop
Dan Masse and the run-
ner was tagged out in
the most unusual double
play of the year.
The Lakeside game
was never close as the
Lizards scored all 13
runs in the first three
innings.
Masse attempted to
stop their attack with
only four days of rest
from his previous start.
It was a game effort
but it didn't pay off.
Grant and Aaron
Patterson shut out the
Lizards for the final
three innings.
Grant allowed zero hits
in his two innings and
Patterson left the bases
full of Lizards as he
struck out the final bat-
ter he faced.
The Express attack
was dormant as they
had only four hits.
Aaron Patterson had
two, Grant and Adam
Leppington had one
each.
The Express now have
four wins and eight loss-
es in league play.
It is hoped some of the
injured players will be
available after a break.
The next home game
for the Express is July
15 in Exeter against
London at 7:30 p.m.

EXETER — Two local
golfers are helping young
golfers improve their skills
at Ironwood Golf Course.
Ron Mabee and Matt
Dietrich are both volun-
teers every Monday night
for the Junior Golf pro-
gram.
Eightyfive golfers are
signed up for the pro-
gram, up from 70 last sea-
son.
Mabee said the two
stepped in to help because
no one else was doing it.
Every Monday night has
a different event such as
Longest Drive, a pre -game
putting contest or Hidden
Score.
"You can see the change
in the kids in a few
weeks," said Mabee.
Dietrich has just finished
his first year on a golf
scholarship in New
Mexico at the College of
the South West.
He is on a general busi-
ness program and said he
is happy with the way
things went the first year.
Dietrich selected the
school after talking to dif-
ferent coaches.

said his short game has
improved.
Practicing five days a
week with five hour days,
Dietrich said the school
has a young golf team, but
it did well during the sea-
son, winning one tourna-
ment.
His plans for the sum-
mer are to take part in the
Ontario Amateur tourna-
ment and possibly the
Canadian Amateur tour-
nament, "but nothing too
serious."
Regarding his golf plans
after completing school,
Dietrich said he will see
how school goes "then
take it from there and see
what happens."
