Fury edge St.Thomas
EXETER — The Exeter Fury trav-
elled to St. Thomas June 29 to play
their first cup game of the season.
The visiting club had a strong
start to the game, controlling most
of the play in the first half.
The Fury's best chance came
when Pete Phouttharath got the
ball in close, but slid it just wide of
the left post and the first half
ended scoreless.
In the second half, momentum
shifted to St. Thomas, but the
Exeter defenders limited the
chances to score.
St. Thomas came close when they
delivered a well struck corner kick
to the penalty spot where it was
headed towards the Fury goal.
But defender Craig Hern made a
game saving stop and the Fury
were able to clear the ball off the
goal line.
It was off to sudden death over-
time as the end of regulation saw a
0-0 draw.
In the first half of overtime, St.
Thomas carried the play against a
tiring Fury squad.
Midway through the 15 minute
frame, a St. Thomas player drifted
the ball towards the Exeter net,
but keeper Nate Holmes got his fin-
gertips on it to deflect it over the
bar.
In the second half, Exeter came
to life.
Fragiskos Fragiskatos made a
throw-in to an open Ryan Carroll
who returned the ball to
Fragiskatos in the corner.
He crossed it to the far post
where it was headed by Tom
Phouttharath.
The St. Thomas keeper made an
excellent save, but the rebound
went to an open Pete McAllister
who buried the ball into the open
net for the winner.
"It was a huge win for us," said
team spokesman Shawn McFalls,
who suffered a knee injury in the
overtime.
"We played as a team and main-
tained a positive attitude. good
things happen when we do this."
The Fury next see regular season
action July 10 at home versus
Delhi.

EXETER — June 28 was
a lucky day for Helen
Wasnidge at the Exeter
Golf Course when she
sank her first hole -in -one
after 25 years of golfing.
The perfect shot hap-
pened on the third hole
which is a par three 135
yard shot.
Wasnidge also sank a
birdie on the hole right
after her hole in one.
"We were hunting for
the ball because we didn't
know where it was. We
looked in the hole and
there it was," said
Wasnidge.
Golfing with Wasnidge
were Louise Kopp, Cathy
Hugill and Anne Helm.
In recognition of her
achievement, Wasnidge
received a hole -in -one
towel from the course as
well as a marker inscribed
with her name for her golf
