Deer collisions on the increase
By Stephanie Mandziuk
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
HURON COUNTY —
During the first six
months of 2005 Huron
OPP investigated 157
vehicle collisions with
deer compared to 128
over the same period
last year.
In one case a driver
struck three deer at the
same time causing
extensive damage to his
truck.
There are several rea-
sons for the increase.
The deer population is
rising. Urban sprawl is
causing natural habitat
to diminish, forcing
deer into more populat-
ed areas. Motorists are
also spending more
time on the roads at all
hours of the day and
night.
Most deer collisions
occur between 6 p.m.
and midnight or around
sunrise, usually on two-
lane roadways.
OPP are offering some
helpful tips to drivers.
Watch for posted signs
warning you about deer
crossings. Be aware of
areas known to have
large deer populations.
Be vigilant on roads
dividing agricultural
fields and forest lands.
While driving, survey
surrounding fields and
roadsides. You will
often spot deer before
they get close to the
roadway.
If you see a deer, slow
down and blow your
horn with one long
blast to scare it off.
Keep in mind if you see
one deer, chances are
others are nearby.
Use high beams if no
traffic is approaching.
They will illuminate the
deer sooner, giving you
a greater reaction time.
If a deer darts in front
of your vehicle, brake
firmly but stay in your
lane. Do not swerve to
avoid hitting it. This
can confuse the deer
and it won't know
where to run. It can
also cause you to lose
control. It is less dan-
gerous to collide with a
deer rather than anoth-
er vehicle, tree, pole or
roadside object. Always
wear your seatbelt.
If you hit a deer, don't
get out of the car. An
injured deer is danger-
ous. If the animal is
blocking the roadway
call police first, then
your insurance compa-
ny.
During the first six
months of this year,
Central Huron has had
the most deer collisions
with 33 followed by
Bluewater with 29 and
ACW with 27. Most col-
lisions happen along
Bluewater Highway.

One final note, while
driving about, always
watch for areas where
there is heavy tree
cover near the road-
way. Also keep an eye
on low lands with
streams, creeks or
rivers crossing under
the roadway or swampy
locations close to the
road.
