By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — Exeter's newest video store is part of a fast-growing chain that includes about 4,000 stores across North America. Movie Gallery opened at Exeter's north end May 6. Store manager Dominique Bonnot is pleased with the response from the community so far. "We're happy," she says. Movie Gallery, based in Alabama, opened its first store in 1985. It recently purchased the Hollywood Video chain in the U.S. and is the second largest video retailer in North America after Blockbuster. After opening its first store in Ontario two years ago (in Grand Bend), Movie Gallery has 39 stores in the province. Bonnot said there had been talk of opening a Movie Gallery in Exeter for about a year. Originally working at the Grand Bend Movie Gallery, Bonnot made the move to the Exeter store and said she likes the location in the north end. "This is kind of the hot spot of town right now," she says. "Things are going really, really well." Movie Gallery's main focus is new movie releases and games, including Playstation 2, Xbox and GameCube. All movie rentals are for two or seven nights. Movie Gallery also sells new and previously viewed movies as well as pre -played games and game acces- sories. Hot rentals at Movie Gallery these days include "The Aviator," "Coach Carter," "Hitch" and "Miss Congeniality 2." And while Bonnot said there are cus- tomers who still rent VHS tapes, DVDs are the hot for- mat and some movies aren't even being released on VHS anymore. Movie Gallery recently held its grand opening, during which one lucky winner won two free rentals a week for a year. 1 1 ' iL Exeter's Movie Gallery is part of a fast-growing chain that has become the second largest video retailer in North America. The Exeter store opened in May.
