(photo/submitted) By Tracy McLennan SPECIAL TO THE T -A EXETER — South Huron District High School Grade 10 history students were treated to a first-hand account of the Normandy Beach invasion of June 6, 1944 by veteran Doug Vidler of Tillsonburg last week. Vidler, who grew up in the Toronto area, was 15 years old when the Second World War started in 1939 and joined up a few years later when he was 19. He had been an assis- tant manager at Loblaws, but joined the Canadian infantry "because his bud- dies joined." His six-week basic train- ing began in Brantford, but he soon moved to Camp Borden where he was asked to learn a mor- tar course. He arrived in England in August 1943, and worked hard to fit in with the Glengarry Scottish Highlanders who had been together for almost two years. Vidler received word he would be involved in the D -Day Invasion on the French coastline while en route to Juno Beach. He was part of the second wave which landed on the Normandy Beach around 10 a.m. According to Vidler, his landing "was not as bad as the first landing," yet his memory is still vivid 61 years later. Vidler and his wife went back to Juno Beach last year for the 60th anniver- sary with a group of veter- ans, their families, stu- dents and teachers. It was "very emotional," but he found it healing. He was also able to attend this year's 60th anniversary of V -E Day in Holland and found it amazing how well received the Canadians are by the Dutch. He stat- ed that he didn't see the thankfulness of the French civilians when they liber- ated France. However, entering Holland to liberate the starving civilians, Canadian soldiers were and still are shown much appreciation. In fact, in one of the small Dutch towns that Canadians lib- erated, 11 men from Vidler's regiment were given recognition by hav- ing a street named for each of the men who died liberating the town. Vidler received a street sign with the name of a comrade which he brought home to give to the soldier's family. One memory of the liber- ation of the coast of Europe occurred for Vidler when he and his regiment were ridding the Scheldt Estuary in Belgium of German sol- diers. This was the moment when, in a bombing attack on the barn the men were resting in, Vidler's best friend was killed beside him by a flying piece of shrapnel. The moment stays etched in Vidler's memory still and is something that nearly broke the then 21 year old. Even now, it is clear how much this tragic event affected him. At the end of the war, Vidler returned home a changed man. Students were shown photos of Vidler at the age of 19 when he joined and at the age of 21 when he returned home. Students noted that he looked about 10 years older than the two years he aged. He suffered from post- traumatic stress for almost 60 years, and it is only recently the govern- ment has acknowledged many Second World War vets suffered from this and are only now being com- pensated. Eventually, Vidler met his wife who had emigrat- ed from England in 1950, and they were married within a year. Vidler ended his talk with the Grade 10 classes by stat- ing that because of his involvement in the Second World War, he now enjoys life much more and is thankful he is still here. He notes that in the past four or five years, Canadians have started to show their appreciation of Canada's vets by attending the Remembrance Day ceremonies at the ceno- taphs. He encouraged the students to keep remem- bering the soldiers who died overseas for their country and for their country's freedom, and to honour them by attending services beyond their high school career. — Tracy McLennan is a history teacher at South Huron District High School cooking with memories BY DEBBY WAGLER No BAKE SOUNDS GREAT ON A DAY OF 31 DEGREES.
