EXETER — After win-
ning the first two games
of the season 5-1 and 4-0,
the Exeter Masters have
fallen hard times losing
three in a row, 3-0, 1-0
and 3-1 and falling below
.500 for the first time.
Exeter's season opening
game was May 19 at
home against Benefica
which scored first but it
was all Exeter after that.
The scoring star of the
game was Mike Flanagan
with three.
Singles went to Ian
Chisholm and Tony
Vanmierlo.
A week later on May 27,
the London Wanderers
came to town and
Exeter's defence and
midfield had strong
games.
The Masters' constant
pressure resulted in two
goals each by Van Mierlo
and Tony Vandenheuvel,
with a 4-0 Exeter win.
London Sporting was in

Fury break slump
EXETER — The Exeter
Fury broke out of their
offensive slump Sunday in
London by scoring four
goals in a 4-1 win over
Marconi.
After only scoring three
goals in their first four
games of the season the
four goal outburst came as
a welcome surprise.
The Fury got on the
board in the first half on a
cross from Tom
Phouttharath that Pete
McAllister deftly headed
into the net for his second
goal in consecutive games.
The Fury extended their
lead to two goals on a free
kick from Ryan Carroll
into the box where Pete
Fragiskatos was able to
beat the goalie with a
header for a 2-0 advan-
tage.
The home team got on
the board on a rare mis-
cue from keeper Nathan
Holmes which allowed a
Marconi player to shoot at
an empty net to cut the
Fury lead in half.
Exeter took the one goal
lead into the second half
and it was Holmes who
made the big saves to
maintain the lead for his
team while the Fury had
some defensive lapses.
Holmes' biggest save
came as he dove to his left
to deflect a high shot just
wide of the post.
Exeter sealed the win on
Tom Phouttharath's first
goal of the season as he
picked up a loose ball after
a deflection by Ben Willis -
Leake and beat the
Marconi keeper for a 3-1
Fury lead.
Phouttharath then
notched his second of the
half after receiving a pass
in the box from Carroll.
Phouttharath fired the
ball into the corner to
round out the scoring.
"Our passing was much
better today," commented
Fury spokesman Jason
McFalls.
"We worked well as a
team and once we learn to
remain positive with each
other when things don't go
our way we are going to
be even better," added
McFalls.
The Fury have a record
of 1-2-2 and their next
action is Sunday in Simcoe
at 5 p.m.
away with a 3-0 win.
An early penalty shot by
Sporting deflated Exeter's
confidence and its offence
couldn't get on track
The officiating was
something to be desired
resulting in numerous
yellow cards with three
going Exeter's way.
The following week on
June 3, saw Exeter play a
much better game.
The visiting Curinga
team was awarded a
direct free kick and the
resulting goal was the
only goal of the game for
a 1-0 visitor win.
On June 17, Exeter's
fifth consecutive home
game saw the Masters
lose a 3-1 match to
London Panhellenic.
A strong London squad
scored the first three
goals with Exeter getting
its lone marker off the
foot of Van Mierlo.
The loss pushed Exeter
under .500 for the first
time this season.
June 11 the Masters
entered the Goderich 30
and over tournament
where they played three
round robin games.
In the morning Exeter
lost 2-0 to a team from
Michigan. at noon the
Masters played the host
Goderich team, winning
2-0.
A well played game by
Exeter, and probably
their best of the year to
date saw Charlie Wise
score on a well placed
kick outside the 18 -yard
box.
The last game saw
Exeter dominate a
Toronto team but the
result was a 0-0 tie and
Exeter didn't advance in
the round robin play.
The next game for the
Masters is its first away
game against Serbia in
London June 24 at 7 p.m.
The next home game is
June 30 at 8 p.m. against
Portuguese B.
