Various types and strengths of insect repellents
work for different lengths of time. Some people
like citronella or lavender oils but they are not
too effective and act for only 1/2 - 2 hrs. Products
containing DEET work best and longest. Those with 30% DEET give
protection for 6 hours and are still the best insect repellents. For
best effect, the repellents should be reapplied after that time.
One further reminder about DEET, for use in children and infants,
use only products containing 10% DEET or less. The product should
not be applied to infants less than 6 months old.
Only 2% of lung cancer cases are caused by environmental or
genetic factors. That leaves 98% of lung cancers are caused by
cigarette smoking. As we have said before in this column, lung
cancer is the most preventable form of cancer.
Couples who are having trouble conceiving a child might try
avoiding alcohol. Risk of miscarriage was much higher in alcohol
users than abstainers. This also applies to the man, too. Alcohol
can find its way to the semen which can affect the ability to
conceive.
