DASHWOOD — Dr. Ming
Lam's patients can rest
assured their doctor will
be here for at least the
next five years.
Lam recently signed a
five-year contract to stay
at the Dashwood and Area
Medical Centre until June
30, 2010.
Medical Centre chair-

Healthy financial report for SH
By Scott Nixon

SOUTH HURON — The municipality
received good news Monday night when
auditor Gerry Mills presented South
Huron's 2004 financial report.
"This is a very healthy finan-
cial position," he said
Mills pointed to the municipal-
ity's 2004 operating fund of
$952,763 as a sign of a healthy
financial situation. While slight-
ly less than the 2003 figure,
Mills said the "operating fund surplus is
a significant positive."
The municipality also showed total
reserves of $4.5 million in 2004 and a
surplus in net revenues (before debt
repayment) of $880,769. However, that
surplus was decreased to $78,891 after
a bank debt repayment of $764,786 and
a revenue transfer of $37,092.
South Huron showed total assets of
$6.4 million in 2004 and liabilities of
$4.5 million.
Council was complimentary towards
municipal staff for the positive
financial situation. Coun.
Harvey Ratz congratulated the
treasury department for inter-
est income of $378,897 in
2004.
"That's good management,"
he said.
Mayor Rob Morley said the 2004
report was "one of our best reports yet,"
and he gave credit to treasurer Sandy
Becker and chief administrative officer
Larry Brown.
"It's certainly a reflection of the staff
we have," Morley said of the report.

position"

SOUTH HURON — A major $7 million project for
Huron Park's residential infrastructure has been
proposed.
As South Huron council discussed Monday night,
the project will see the replacement of water lines,
sewers, roads, curbs, gutters and sidewalks. The
project, which will go to tender in the middle of
July, is in reaction to the former military base's
ageing and deteriorating infrastructure, which is
over 50 years old.
South Huron chief administrative officer Larry
Brown said the project will take two years. A pub-
lic meeting will be held concerning the project
once the tender is awarded.
With 358 homes in the park, the project amounts
to about $20,000 per home, a tab the province is
on the hook for since the province owns the land.
As Morley said, the province is loaning the
money for the project to South Huron, but the
municipality will then charge the province for the
project's cost.
He said he hopes a similar project will eventually
be done on the industrial side of the park, which
the government is in the process of privatizing.
Morley said one of the stumbling blocks in priva-
tizing the industrial side is the old infrastructure.
Brown said the Ontario Realty Corporation (the
government branch that manages the park for the
province) has been notified of the $7 million pro-
ject on the residential side and has no objections.
"We pushed very hard," Morley said.
Other council notes:
Wind farm project?
A public meeting will be held June 29 at the
Stanley Complex in Varna concerning a proposed
wind farm between Grand Bend and St. Joseph
While details were sketchy Monday night, Brown
said he thinks the project would go ahead to the
east of Highway 21.
Morley said he doesn't think much of the project,
proposed by Northland Power Inc. of Toronto, will
be in South Huron.
The June 29 public meeting goes from 8-10 p.m.
Representatives from Northland will be on hand to
provide information on the project and answer
questions.
Streetlight problems
If you noticed streetlights on in the south of
Exeter during the day last week, the culprit was a
defective relay, which resulted in a decision to
leave the lights on. Operations manager Dennis
