Lucan hockey player on the ice in England
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — "To get over
to Europe while the lock-
out was on was a big
thing for me, because
there would be a pretty
good calibre
of player, so
just getting
over there
when jobs
were tough
was impor-
tant."
Lucan
hockey player Jeremy
Cornish was on the ice on
the other side of the
Atlantic Ocean last win-
ter, after being selected
for the Elite Ice Hockey
League (EIHL) in
England.
Cornish, 25, is a right
winger and came up
through the Lucan minor
hockey system.
He played Junior A in
Aurora and Nova Scotia.
After getting a call last
year if he was interested
in playing in Europe,
Cornish was in London,
England by early
September with the
London Racers.
It was the first time in
England for Cornish who
said he loved it.
"It's one of the
best cities in the
world obviously
and coming
from Lucan it's
a big change...it
was just a good
experience all
It's the most North
America style game
we could get over
there."

around."
Cornish said each team
is allowed 11 imports and
between eight and 10 of
those are Canadian.
"It's just like any pro
league in North America,
you have a couple of
Europeans and the rest
will be full of Canadians."
According to Cornish,
the quality of hockey is "a
little bit below the
American League, but
good hockey.
Rangers split games
ZURICH — On June 10
the Zurich Rangers trav-
eled to Wroxeter to face
the Rippers.
The Rangers continued
to swing hot bats, pound-
ing out 11 runs to cruise
to an 11-4 victory.
The Rangers took con-
trol of the game when
they scored five runs in
the seventh inning.
Mark Ritchie pitched a
complete game for the
victory and Dwayne
LaPorte homered to lead
the offence.
The win gave the
Rangers a four game
winning streak.
On June 12, the
Rangers' winning streak
ended with an 8-5 loss to
the Exeter Braves.
Zurich had a poor start
to the game, trailing 7-1
after three innings.
The Rangers battled
back with four runs in
the fourth to trail 7-5, but
could not finish the
comeback.
Jeff Finkbeiner had
four hits in the game for
Zurich.
The Rangers' record
now stands at five wins
and three losses.
Their next game is
Wednesday in Brussels,
followed by a game in
Zurich Sunday at 8:30
p.m.
Hot racingweekend
at Motorplex
GRAND BEND — The
Grand Bend Motorplex
was on fire this weekend
with the annual Mopar
Canadian Nationals,
which drew 36,300 spec-
tators to the three-day
event.
Among the highlights of
the weekend was the
marriage of Dawn Leslie
and Michael Lebold of
Stratford, at the starting
line of the drag strip.
After the marriage
Saturday afternoon, the
couple raced their motor-
cycles to decide their
honeymoon destination,
which Lebold won and
picked British Columbia.
In more traditional
races, two-time funny car
champion Rob Atchison
of London had a frustrat-
ing weekend.
Atchison was eliminat-
ed from the quarter-
finals with mechanical
problems.
High temperatures also
made for a fast track,
with several records
being broken.
The track record in pro
mod of 228.29 was
smashed by Al Billes of
Barrie, who posted a time
of 6.240 seconds on a
speed of 231.28 m.p.h.
One of the more experi-
enced drivers on the
track was 75 -year old
Chris Karamesine from
Chicago who raced a
4.983 run Saturday night
in pro mod.
Weather played another
factor when Mike Janis of
Lancaster, N.Y. was elim-
inated because of fuel
problems
After his semifinal win
in top fuel pro mod, a
routine check of Janis's
fuel found irregularities,
disqualifying him.
But Janis said it was
probably high humidity
that caused water to
enter the fuel tank.
Lucan's Jeremy Cornish spent the past season playing
hockey in England as a member of the London Racers.

there is lots of ice time

The league has 10
teams including Belfast,
Cardiff, Sheffield and
Coventry which had
Toronto Maple Leaf play-
er Wade Belak on its ros-
ter.
The Racers had a good
solid team according to
Cornish, but were a little
weak on goaltending and
lost in the playoffs to
Coventry, which eventual-
ly won the championship.
The Racers also had a
pair of NHL players, with
Eric Cairns and Scott
Nichol.
Even with the NHL play-
ers on the roster, Cornish
said he received lots of ice
time, playing 20 minutes
a game on the second and
third lines as well as
power play time.
"I'm a physical winger
and I'm not used to all the
ice time, so it was good
for me to get over there."
The larger ice surface
was also an advantage to
his style of play said
Cornish.

so it was good for my feet,
my skating and my stick -

handling. Its takes guys
longer to get to you so you
can get your head up and
make a play."
With a mixture of the
European and North
American styles of play,
Cornish said the EIHL is
the toughest league in
Europe.
"It's a good league all
around, pretty quick, lots
of puck movement. It's
the most North America
style game we could get
over there."
With England having
had pro hockey since the
30s', Cornish said the
fans love the game and
are well informed.
"Wear and tear," was
one of the only differ-
ences between the
leagues in North America
and Europe, said Cornish.
The league has a 50
game schedule, compared
to 60 or 70 in North
America and less distance
to travel for road games.
Cornish said he would
like to return to England
next season and while he
has an offer from the
Racers, is waiting to see
how the NHL lockout pro-
gresses.
"I've already committed
to going back, if I don't
decide to play here. It's
just a matter of letting the
lockout end and see if
there are any job offers
here for me when that
happens."
