Grand Bend offers
sailing school
GRAND BEND — In
co-operation with the
Ontario Sailing
Association's BOOM
program, the Grand
Bend Yacht Club will
offer two weeks of sail-
ing instruction at the
club's facilities on
River Road and on
Lake Huron.
The BOOM mobiles
are a group of four
traveling sailing
schools that travel to
different communities
around Ontario and
teach sailing.
Ontario Sailing runs
the mobile sailing
school, and the instruc-
tors are certified by the
Canadian Yachting
Association (CYA).
The BOOM program
began almost 30 years
ago, and in that time it
has introduced over
10,000 people, primari-
ly youth, to sailing.
The sailing school
runs this year from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m., July 25
to 29.
Week two runs
August 2 to 5.
BOOM programs give
participants lots of
time on the water.
The instructors use
games and activities to
make learning how to
sail fun on and off the
water.
The BOOM mobile is
for children ages eight -
14 years old.
This learn to sail pro-
gram teaches begin-
ning sailors the basics,
while still challenging
the intermediate sailor.
Participants can work
on their CYA White Sail
Levels I, II, and III.
Children can be regis-
tered for one or both
weeks.
The cost for the first
week is $210 per child
for five days instruc-
tion.
For the second week
the cost per child is
$170 for four days.
Applicants will be
accepted on a first-
come basis.

and an online applica-
tion form, look under

Zurich peewees
ZURICH — Crediton travelled to Zurich June 8 to
take on the Zurich peewees.
The home team battled it out with timely hits and
base running to win 15-12.
Katelyn Schade started the game on the mound and
was relieved by Becca Skinner
Skinner notched seven strikeouts and shut down the
Crediton bats while her teammates hit to put the score
ahead 15-5.
Hits by Jenna Beierling, Jessie Geoffrey and Emily
Ainslie moved base runners around crossing the plate.
Taelor Douglas came to the mound for her first out-
ing, and Geoffrey closed the game and the opposition
down with two strikeouts and no runs in the final
inning.
Usborne met Zurich at home June 12.
Both teams entered the game undefeated in league
play.
Usborne quickly jumped on the score board and shut
down the Zurich offence allowing only one run in the
first three innings while crossing the plate safely seven
times.
Zurich came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning.
After waiting out the opposing pitcher and receiving
a walk, Brittany Greasier moved around the bases on a
timely bunt by Cheryl Regier.
Beierling, Grenier and Regier scored after Skinner
notched a double who was then brought home on a
single by Kristena Hendrick.
Entering the final inning, Zurich scored three runs to
win the game.
They were led by a single from Melanie Hunt,
Schade's well placed bunt, a forced hit error by Jaemi
Douglas and a bunt down first base line by Ainslie.
Starting pitcher Geoffrey and finisher Skinner, strug-
gled through the heat, trading off innings and not giv-
ing up.
Great defence and timely outs by the infield with-
stood Usborne's players in their final inning

Special presentations
were made to two
SHDHS staff who are
leaving the school.
Vince Trocchi, who
will be the vice-principal
at Clinton Public, said "I
love working here, it's
the best school I've ever
been at. My biggest
regret is that I couldn't
coach more."
Another absence will
be felt at SHDHS with
the departure of vice-
principal George
McEwan, who is leaving
to become vice-principal
at Mitchell High School.
McEwan has been at
South Huron since 1987,
and was described by
O'Rourke as a dedicated
teacher and coach "and
one of the finest contrib-
utors to athletics at
SHDHS."
McEwan said there is
always a loss when mov-
ing from the classroom
to the office.
"Commit to the sport
you're playing," said
McEwan.
"If you get beat it
won't be because you
didn't try."
Fury rally for tie
EXETER — The
Exeter Fury battled
Benfica to a 1-1 draw
Sunday night at home.
The Fury battled back
to tie the score late in
the game after both
teams had a player
ejected for fighting.
Benfica was already a
man short for an earli-
er ejection which
allowed Exeter to cre-
ate space by having a
10 on nine advantage
with time running out.
With about five min-
utes left Pete McAllister
was able to get his head
on a ball in the box to
give the Fury the single
point.
Benfica had taken the
lead early in the first
half on a redirected
header that went over
keeper Nathan Holmes'
outstretched arms.
Exeter had few offen-
sive chances and at
halftime the score
remained 1-0.
The Fury started to
create more offence in
the half which resulted
in a Fury player being
hauled down in the box.
The ensuing penalty
shot by Tom
Phouttharath sailed
high over the net to
keep the Fury behind
by a goal.
McAllister's goal later
in the game gave the
Fury its second tie of
the season.
The Fury continued to
play well defensively
and with sweeper Ryan
Hern patrolling the
back and Joe Forrester
covering a lot of
ground, Benfica's
opportunities were lim-
ited.
Both players had
excellent games, said
team spokesman Jason
McFalls.
"The two teams were
pretty even tonight so a
tie is a fair result," he
said.
"We've had a player
ejected in three out of
four games this season
which is not how the
game should be played.
Guys have to learn to
play under control if we
are going to be success-
ful this year."
The next action for
the Fury is a Father's
Day match in London
against Marconi.
