Riding the Blue Wave Thursday night, PC Helen Johns won the Huron riding with 13,344 votes over Liberal John Jewitt at 7,008 votes and incum- bent Paul Klopp of the NDP recorded 6,927 votes. At the recent Hensall Spring Fair calf club com- petition, Veal's Meat Market purchased the cham- pionship calf from Nathan Elford for $2.25 a pound and Brent Ribey's reserve winner went to Hensall Co-operative for $1.70 a pound. Melissa Timmermans was crowned Ambassador of the Hensall Fair for 1995-96. 20YEARS AGO June 13, 1985 - The Huron County Board of Education's superintendent Peter Gryseels is leav- ing at the end of August to take up a similar posi- tion with the London Board of Education. Larry Stuck, clerk -treasurer and tax collector for the township of Usborne for the past 18 months has been dismissed from those positions. 25 YEARS AGO June 11, 1980 - Don Hooper, a mail courier for RR 1, Exeter for the past 25 years was recently honoured with a presentation from Exeter Postmaster Harvey C. Pfaff. 35 YEARS AGO June 14, 1995 - Persons wishing to bring mat- ters before Exeter's new committee of adjustment will have to pay a fee of $25 for the work involved. Mayor Jack Delbridge objected saying, "You are all bloody wrong. Most changes in the zoning bylaw result in higher taxes for the municipality." Councillor Helen Jermyn reported most communi- ties were asking that the limit of $25 be raised. 40YEARS AGO June 16, 1965 - At the Provincial Trap Shoot at St. Thomas on Saturday, John Anderson of Kippen was runnerup in Class C with a score of 192 out of 200. 45 YEARS AGO June 12, 1960 - Mrs. C. S. MacNaughton, Mrs. Fred Dobbs and Mrs. Richard Dickins attended the June meeting of the Huron County Home to plan for the Christmas Fair for the residents. This year Huron County had the highest of con- firmable cases of animal rabies in the province of Ontario. 50YEARS AGO June 12, 1955 - Tom Pryde of the Conservatives won his fourth provincial election Thursday with the largest majority in his career. He defeated James Scott of Seaforth by a margin of 1,504 votes. 55 YEARS AGO June 11, 1950 - Grade 9 students of Exeter District High School have just concluded their turkey project. Five weeks ago they purchased 200 broad -breasted bronze turkeys which they have cared for under the direction of agriculture teacher Andrew Dixon. Most of them have been sold, but several students took home a few birds to raise. 60YEARS AGO June 11, 1945 - The Exeter Wartime committee last week mailed 145 parcels to boys overseas at a cost of $427.25. The opening of the new Massey Harris show- room by Mr. B. Williams and Son Friday evening drew a crowd that packed the large building with an overflow almost as large. I I OYEARS AGO June 12, 1895 - The sale of the Ball Estate in Dashwood took place Wednesday. The crowd was large, although bidding was far from brisk. The furniture and undertaking business and premises were sold to Messrs. Hoffman, stepsons of the deceased for $2,600, while the 25 acres of land went to Messrs. Willem and Calfas for $1,100. The Jersey cow was bought by William Bawden. A new post office is being established at Hurondale on Mr. John Dew's property and that gentleman has consented to be postmaster. By the new arrangement Lumley will receive daily instead of tri -weekly services and Hurondale a daily mail with less weekly mileage than by the old routes. Seniors' Perspective By Jim Bearss ADULT ACTIVITIES CO-ORDINATOR Third Annual Trade Fair and Information Expo A special thank you to the volunteers who helped in all areas of the trade fair. Donors of door prizes: Cruise Sell Offs and Harry Hardy, Wellington Apple Products, Rona Cashway, South Huron Chamber of Commerce, Alzheimer Society, Hospital Auxiliary, Stephen Printing, Wuerth Shoes, Red Hat Society, Canada Post, Laurmart Trucking, Huron Pork Producers, B & B Clothing.and Gaiser Kneale Insurance, and Coldwell Banker Real Estate. Thanks to Edward Brill, Mar Ontario who gave everyone an interesting demonstra- tion with his painting by mouth. Two groups of high school art class students under the direction of Ms. Carlene Hone were amazed at Ed's ability. The entertainment, including Exeter high school band, Taryn Dougall gave a very interesting talk about "Canadian" Marilyn Dykeman, flower demonstration by Natalie Kerslake of Village Vines, Bob Heywood amd L'il Audrey (Audrey Haugh) and "Willis the White Squirrel." There were 48 exhibitors and service organiza- tions to help the over 400 people in attendance at the show: Mr B's Renovations, B & B Wearing Apparel, Casey's Lawn Care, South Huron Chamber of Commerce, Leon Coolman, Cruise Sell Offs, Crest Centre with lots of home baking, Diabetes Education Centre, Dura Med Mobility Products, Exeter Villa, Exeter Decor Centre, Health Hut, Julie Grimmick (foot specialist), Hay Communications, Hayter Turkey Products, Hopper Hockey Funeral Home, Heartland Credit Union, Huron Apothecary, Huron County Playhouse, Huron Motor Products, The Jewellery Box, Mary Kay (Andrea Stephens), Lifetime Home Products, Leads Employment, Reflexology, McCully Hill Farm, Municipality of South Huron (cemetery divi- sion), Pints Unlimited, RSD Authentics, Royal Bank RBC, Scotiabank, Total Energy, Town & Country Support Services, VON Palliative Care, Warm Weather Enterprises, Weedman, Wuerth Shoes, Alzheimer Society, Emergency medical Services, South Huron Fire Department, Hospital Auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion, Red Hat Society and the Relay for Life. Exeter Senior Citizens held their June 7 meeting at the Legion Hall; 62 seniors and friends enjoyed a bountiful potluck supper at 6 p.m. President Shirley Kirk presided for the business meeting. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Gerald Dearing, Ruth Squires, Stu McLellan, Lois Armstrong and Joyce Lavender. Cecil and Ruth Squires and Ervin and Doris Sillery celebrate anniversaries this month. Correspondence was read and we received an invitation to join Seaforth Seniors on Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. for dessert and meeting after. Jim Bearss gave the Senior Activity report. Thanked all for their support at the trade fair and told us the story of "The Housekeeper." Berdene Morgan chaired the program. She wished all the fathers a happy father's day and read "The Handy Dandy" (Dandelion) and "Do You Realize." June Hodgson introduced guest speaker Alma Langford who told the story of her "First Date." Hodgson thanked her and presented her with a gift of appreciation. Morgan read "Sharing Till Death Do Us Part" and "When It Comes To a Figure Of Speech." Door prize winners were Gerald Dearing, Lorraine Alexander, Audrey McDonald and Marian Dougall. Share The Wealth winners were Mary Horn, Vera Armstrong, Lois Armstrong, Mildred Chalmers, Gladys Bierling, Ervin Sillery, Marian Dougall, Chris Phillips and Orville Webber. The meeting closed with The Seniors Prayer. There are NO MEETINGS IN JULY AND AUGUST.
