In the book, Stanley is crushed flat by a falling bulletin board. One of the advantages Stanley discovers from this is that he can visit his friends around the world by travelling in an envelope. Students at Exeter Public made their own "flat" charac- ters and mailed them to various places around the world, such as China,Australia and Europe as well as across North America.
