EXETER — The WK/Co-
Op Juniors got two great
outings last week from
pitchers Jon Brand and
Ricky Regier to extend
their winning streak to six
games and climb to a tie
for first place in the
league.
Exeter 4, Ilderton 0
May 31 saw Exeter trav-
eling to Labatt Park in
London, to take on
Ilderton.
Jon Brand was the story
for the Juniors, both in
pitching and hitting.
Brand started the game
with nine straight outs,
seven of those strikeouts.
Brand found the zone
early and just kept throw-
ing by the Merton hitters,
mentioned manager Jeff
Keller.
"You can tell when Jon
is on, and even after the
first batter, we knew he
would be in there for a
while," said Keller.
Brand pitched the com-
plete game, allowing just
one hit and no walks for
the shutout.
He had 11 strikeouts,
and if not for an Exeter
error in the sixth, would
have had just one runner
on base all night.
Brand was the story
offensively for the Juniors
as well.
With two out in Exeter's
half of the third, Brand hit
a ground -rule double over
right -centre field.
With Brand on base,
Tim Meidinger followed
suit with a double of his
own.
Brand scored easily on
the play putting Exeter up
1-0.
Exeter scored their sec-
ond run of the game when
Steve Regier reached base
on a walk, stole second,
then scored on a fielder's
choice.
The seventh inning was
almost a carbon -copy of
the third.
With Regier on with a
walk, and Matt Johns on
with a single, Brand belt-
ed another double, this
time to left field.
Regier and Johns scored
easily, capping off the 4-0
win.
Exeter 4, Komoka 0
The lights were shining
down on Alvin Willert
Field for Exeter's first
home game of the season.
June 2 with many fans in
the stands as well.
"I want to personally
thank every one of the
fans for coming out. It
really got the guys
pumped and it felt really
good," said Keller.
Exeter pitching was
once again the highlight of
the evening, with Ricky
Regier getting the start for
Exeter.
Regier started out a little
shaky in the first (proba-
bly nervous from having
so many people watching),
said Keller.
However, the defence
behind him held off
Komoka after they led off
with a double and a hit
batter.
After the first inning,
Regier got into the groove
Zurich Peewees continue to win
ZURICH — The Zurich Peewee Girls

league play May 25 with their bats

Katelyn Schade, Danielle Daters, and
Hendrick notching doubles.
Singles were swung by Becca Skinner
and Jessica Geoffery with three each, two
from Regier plus hits from Taelor
Douglas and Kelsey Oke.
Schade started the game on the mound
with Skinner coming in to relieve her.
Skinner pitched a strong game with 12
strikeouts.
On May 30, Zurich travelled to Listowel.
In a close game, 13-9, Zurich proved
victorious. Starting pitcher Schade was
relieved by Skinner.
Skinner and the infield shut the home
team down limiting them to two runs
after the second inning.
Leading at the plate were Hendrick
with a double, plus Geoffrey and
Douglas with two singles each.
June 3-4 Zurich played at the Mitchell
Minor Fastballfest.
In an exciting weekend of play, Zurich
challenged three teams and played well,
winning one game and coming close in
two defeats.
Geoffrey pitched a strong first game
against Listowel, limiting the hits.
The opposing pitchers gave out six
walks which later tallied as runs, assist-
ing the 8-3 win for Zurich.
Hitting for Zurich were Douglas with
two and Hendrick and Regier also con-
tributing.
Saturday morning saw Zurich facing a
strong team from New Hamburg.
Zurich scored early with Douglas
crossing the plate in the first inning.
Hendrick turned two singles into runs
running the bases well with hits from Oke
and Regier.
Daters added the fourth run for Zurich
in the sixth inning on a hit by Emily
Ainslie.
Skinner started the game on the mound
with Geoffrey spelling her off.
An off third inning with walks and
errors on the field allowed six runs lead-
ing the way for the New Hamburg victory
9-4.
Zurich's next game saw the team scor-
ing first again against Sebringville with
leadoff batter Douglas.
Geoffrey was strong on the mound but a
few errors in the field allowed unearned
runs to cross the plate.
Down 7-2 at the bottom of the second,
Zurich stormed back with four runs.
Melanie Hunt, Jenna Beierling and
Geoffrey connected for singles while
Douglas and Hendrick waited the oppos-
ing pitcher out for walks.
The game ended after the fourth due to
time constraints with Zurich losing 8-6.
Zurich's next league game is June 8 in
Zurich against Crediton at 7 p.m.
and pitched all seven
innings, getting the
shutout with 12 strikeouts,
one walk and just four
hits.
"We really liked what
we saw from Rick
tonight," said coach Mike
Seip.
Exeter scored all the
runs they would need in
the second inning after
Dave Gingerich hit a shot
down the first -base line.
Gingerich advanced to
second on a sacrifice bunt
by Justin Hayter.
Matt Iredale hit a shot
up the middle to score
Gingerich.
Iredale later scored on a
hit by Steve Reiger, after
stealing second base.
Exeter added runs in the
third on a hit by
Meidinger and another
one in the fifth when
Mitch Iredale reached
base on a Komoka error.
Matt Iredale had two
hits on the night in the DH
spot, and Gingerich,
Hayter, Meidinger and
Steve Regier all added sin-
gles.
Exeter had a perfect
game, committing no
errors.
Keller said, "we have
had a pretty good start to
the season. The pitching
has been fantastic and the
defence has been pretty
good as well. Our bats
are coming along.
"We have to keep work-
ing hard and keep playing
fundamental baseball."
Exeter was in Komoka
Tuesday night and they
play at home Thursday
night at 8 p.m. against
Strathroy.
