With a few new faces, new coach Andrew Prout and a new style of play, the Fury were looking to get off to a good start to the season. The visitors began the game well, displaying their new short game. The Fury had a couple of chances early on, but were not able to capitalize. St Thomas was able to slip behind the Fury defensive line after a failed clearing attempt to score the first goal of the game midway through the first half. The Fury found them- selves in trouble a short while later when Ryan Carroll was ejected for receiving his second yel- low card of the game. Playing a man short did- n't deter the Fury, who on the next play, sent a cross in front of the St. Thomas net and the ball was deposited into the goal by newcomer Geoff Hall. The momentum was shortlived as once again the Fury were unable to clear their zone, which resulted in a second St. Thomas goal. Going into the second half, the Fury settled down and played a better defen- sive game. Neither team had many quality chances to score but a free kick with five minutes left in the game was the tonic the Fury needed. Pete Phouttharath put the shot on net, but the keeper couldn't handle it cleanly. Several Fury members charged the net and Matt Prout was able to corral the rebound and put it off the crossbar and into the net for the tying goal in the 2-2 match. "It was a considering man short, spokesman Ryan Carroll fights off a tackle for the Exeter Fury Sunday night against London. The Fury were edged 1-0 and will be in Woodstoc kJune 4. (photo/Pat Bolen) good game we were a said team Shawn McFalls following the con- test. "There are areas in which we can improve and we'll work on these in the weeks ahead." Sunday night the Fury were at home to face London Portuguese and came out on the short end of a 1-0 game. Exeter started the game with crisp passing, con- trolling the first 10 min- utes of play. The half then evened out with Exeter getting the best chance to break the scoreless draw. A free kick from the left side was passed to Chris Hern who crossed the ball into the six-yard line where it was kicked into the net by Tom Phoutthoruth. The second half began like the first did with the Fury getting the chances to score. A scramble inside the box resulted in a good scoring chance for both Phouttharath and Pete McAllister, but neither was able to finish. A London handball inside the 18 -yard box resulted in a penalty shot, but the London keeper made the save and with the help of his defence, kept the ball out of the net. That proved costly as late in the game. The Portuguese winger crossed the ball into the middle and the striker made no mistake in bury- ing it into the back of the Exeter goal. Any chance of a last minute rally was stifled when, for the second time in as many games, a Fury player was ejected when tempers were lost. "We all played well, especially the defenders," said McFalls. "We had our chances, but just couldn't find the touch. We didn't give up many chances either. It was a tough game to lose." The Fury next see action June 4 in Woodstock.
