STUDENT OF THE YEAR
STUDENT OF THE YEAR WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT SOUTH HURON'S FORMAL - SAT. JUNE 4
PRESENTATION BETWEEN 10:30 AND 11:00 P.M.
SHELBY MUSSER
Throughout Shelby's high school career she has
enjoyed keeping a busy schedule, balancing time
between academics, athletics, and other extracur-
riculars.
In her four years Shelby has participated in the
school's cross-country, field hockey, ice hockey, vol-
leyball, badminton and soccer teams. Her activities
led her to be a top female athlete nominee each
year, and a winner of the award in Grade nine.
Along with her teams she has made four OFSAA
appearances with three in field hockey and one in
ice hockey.
Besides athletic involvement, Shelby has been a
member of the school's Prefect, Peer Mentors and
OSAID (Ontario Students Against Impaired
Driving) teams with hopes of helping to be a leader
around the school and to pass on a little advice to
the younger students.
While always a busy student, Shelby has consis-
tently maintained her marks, achieving honours sta-
tus each year of high school along with some top
subject awards.
Hoping to continue with her busy schedule,
Shelby plans to attend the University of Western
Ontario next year in the Nursing program.
Shelby would like to thank all the people who
support her in her academic and athletic activities.
Shelby is the daughter of proud parents Jane and
John, and the sister of Scot, Lee and Stevie.
SHAN COOPER
I transferred to SHDHS at the beginning of my
Grade 1 1 year after spending a year in Seaforth
and one at CHSS in Clinton.
I immediately took advantage of the extracur-
ricular programs South Huron had to offer, which
made the move an easy one, and one which I was
glad to make.
This year 1 was on the volleyball, badminton and
soccer teams, where we took home the bronze
atWOSSA for senior girls soccer. It was a great
way to end my last high school soccer season. 1
am also on the prefect committee and am co-
chair of entertainment for Relay for Life. It has
been a huge responsibility but one I am eager to
take on.
Outside of school 1 balance work with tutoring,
soccer, baseball and music and have taught step
dancing to several young students. I have also
earned my certification as a lifeguard and plan to
guard this summer. I received early acceptance
from the University of Guelph this winter and
can't wait to start in the fall. I will be studying
Agricultural Development and Political Science
and hope to pursue a career within the Ministry
of Agriculture.
My parents, Jim and Beth, farm in the Kippen
and Exeter areas and own an agricultural busi-
ness.
During Grade 9 Lindsay Anne Allen was a member of OSAID and the girl's school rugby team.
Lindsay also participated in the 30 Hour Famine. In the summer, Lindsay volunteered at the
Canada Summer Games in Grand Bend. She also participated for the first time with Huron
County Children for Chernobyl. Lindsay helped make a young boy's first ever visit to Canada
from Belarus a very memorable summer.
In Grade 10, Lindsay again was on the girl's school rugby team, and a volunteer for OSAID. She
performed in the year end school performance and participated in the 30 Hour Famine. In the
summer Lindsay Anne volunteered with the South Huron Soccer Organization by coaching and
introducing little ones to the game of soccer. This was Lindsay's second summer volunteering
with Huron County Children for Chernobyl.
Grade 11 was also a very busy year for Lindsay — she played on the girls' school rugby team
and volunteered with Relay for Life at the school. Lindsay's co-op experience was working at
Exeter Public School and with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization.
In Grade 11, Lindsay received The Stacey Case Congeniality Memorial Award. This award was
voted on by her peers. Lindsay is very proud to have won this award.
She also competed in the Hensall Fair Ambassador competition at the Hensall Spring Fair,
where she was crowned Hensall Fair Ambassador and also won the Congeniality award. During
the summer, Lindsay participated in many local parades representing Hensall. Again she welcomed
her Belarus friend to Canada.
This year, in Grade 12, Lindsay represented fellow
classmates as Deputy Premier on Student Council, and
attended the Ontario Student Leadership Conference
with her fellow council members.
Lindsay again played on the girls' school rugby team
and performed in the year end school performance.
Lindsay also volunteered at the Memorial Cup games in
London.
This summer Lindsay is participating in the Explore
Program. She will spend five weeks in residence at
Trois-Rivieres University in the French as a Second
Language Program. Also this summer, Lindsay will com-
pete at the Canadian National Exhibition, representing
Hensall in the Fair Ambassador Competition.
Next year, Lindsay plans to return to South Huron to
concentrate heavily on getting into university to study
social sciences. Lindsay would like to teach at the sec-
ondary level some day. She looks forward to repre-
senting the students of South Huron as Student
Trustee for 2005 - 2006.
LINDSAY ALLEN
MARCIA MELICK
Over the past five years, Marcia has had the opportunity to be a
part of several activities in both the school and the community.
She has been actively involved with sports teams playing basket-
ball, volleyball, cross country and badminton. During this time she
was co -captain for volleyball and received some awards for her
excellence in sports.
She was also active with music in the school and the community.
She has played a dynamic role in the jazz and concert bands at
South Huron as a lead alto player for the past three years and a
trumpet player for the past two years. Her musical ability has
increased as a result of the opportunities and responsibilities she
has been given. Marcia also plays piano with the bands in her
church and enjoys using her musical talents in this way. Marcia's
musical skills introduced her to the performance aspect of music as
she played saxophone at the Playhouse in a show called "The
Buddy Holly Story." Music has been a large part of Marcia's high
school life and she will continue to study music at the University of
Western Ontario this fall.
Marcia has also demonstrated leadership skills in the school and
the community. Last year she was the junior treasurer on student
council and she is the senior treasurer for this year's student coun-
cil. Other leadership skills were demonstrated on the youth coun-
cil at her church when she was president last year and had other
positions in previous years. Marcia's active participation in her
church has led her to go on several different mission trips through
which she helped out the community.
This year she has expanded her abilities and undertook new
roles using the skills she has developed throughout high school.
Marcia was involved with the school show, a great learning experi-
ence for her. She also is the financial chair for Relay for Life on June
10 (nothing like a little advertisement) and is looking forward to
participating in the walk for cancer.
Marcia would like to thank all the staff and students of South
Huron and the community who have made these years so memo-
rable. Her parents, Audrey and Mel Melick are pleased with her
dedication to help others and to achieve her best.
Julie Prout is one of those students you may always, or may never see,
depending on the number of activities you take part in.
She is heavily involved in many areas of the high school, including athletics,
music, and student clubs, and has been on the honour roll for four years.
As a South Huron Panther, Julie has had the pleasure of playing on a number
of sports teams. She has played basketball and volleyball for five years and was
the captain and co -captain of both in 2004 and 2005. She has also enjoyed play-
ing rugby for four years, in which she led the team as co -captain in 2005.
This year, she played on the tennis and cross country teams, advancing her
skills in two unfamiliar sports. Julie also plays baseball every year in the summer.
Julie has also taken a significant interest in the outstanding music program at
SHDHS. She has played in both the concert and jazz bands, on clarinet, tenor
saxophone, tuba and trombone. This is her second year she has had the oppor-
tunity to be a lead chair clarinet player in the senior concert band, where she
has gained confidence, patience, and most importantly co-operation.
Julie has also been active in devoting her time to student clubs. Last year, Julie
took on the role of Premier on the Student
Council. She had a rewarding experience,
which improved her leadership, organization
and personal skills. She was also a basketball
camp coach for the Panthers' Basketball
Camp last year. This year, she is on the food
committee for Relay for Life, a member of
Habitat for Humanity and the Prefect com-
mittee.
Julie is heading to University of Waterloo
where she will be studying Honours
Kinesiology in the Co-op stream. She is
looking forward to meeting new friends and
joining the varsity rugby team. Julie is the
daughter of Tom and Bev Prout, and
youngest sister of Rebekah, Melissa and
Carrie.
